An image forming apparatus according to an aspect of the invention comprises a scanning unit configured to scan an image, a receiving unit configured to receive image data, a storing unit configured to store image data obtained by the scanning by the scanning unit and image data received by the receiving unit, an image forming unit configured to form an image on the basis of the image data stored in the storing unit, a connecting unit configured to connect an external storage device, an operation inputting unit configured to accept and input operation of image processing desired by a user and various kinds of information, a designating unit configured to designate one of the storing unit and the external storage device connected by the connecting unit, and a restricting unit configured to restrict predetermined image processing when the external storage device is designated by the designating unit.

An image processing system comprises a photocopier and an information processor. The photocopier scans and images each page of a document, creates a thumbnail image from each scanned image, and sends the thumbnail images to the information processor. Using the information processor, a user then specifies an image output sequence by rearranging the thumbnail images with a pointing device. The photocopier receives this output sequence information from the information processor, and using the printer section of the photocopier prints the scanned images according to the specified output sequence contained in the received sequence information.

A disclosed image forming apparatus includes: an image data input unit inputting image data; an image data storage unit storing the image data; a storage method change unit changing a storage method of the image data; an image data output unit outputting the image data; an available capacity detection unit detecting available capacity of the image data storage unit; an available capacity judgment unit judging whether the available capacity is not more than a predetermined value; and a storage method selection unit prompting selection of a storage method performed by the image data storage unit. When the available capacity is judged to be not more than the predetermined value, the storage method selection unit prompts the selection of a storage method, the storage method change unit changes the storage method of the image data, and the image data output unit outputs image data.

An image forming apparatus includes an information acquiring unit, a memory-capacity management unit, a setting change unit, an image processing unit, and an image memory. When a volume of image data stored in the image memory exceeds a threshold, the memory-capacity management unit interrupts the information acquiring unit from acquiring information on an image. The setting change unit changes setting conditions for image output to reduce a storage capacity required by image data in the image memory, and changes a condition of a setting item required to be changed along with the primary change. The image processing unit converts the image data stored in the image memory according to the changed setting conditions.

Transmission and receiving of image data recorded on a digital still camera to and from a server are controlled by a portable telephone set. At the time of transmission, communication between the portable telephone set and the digital still camera and communication between the portable telephone set and the server are established. A reading command is issued from the portable telephone set to the camera. Image data are transmitted in packet units to the portable telephone set from the camera in response to the reading command. The image data is transmitted to the server from the portable telephone set. At the time of receiving, when the communication is established, all image data are transmitted to the portable telephone set from the server. All the image data are transmitted to the camera from the portable telephone set and are recorded in the camera. It is possible to control the transmission and receiving of the image data by the portable telephone set.

An image-reading device includes a reading unit, a displaying unit, a recognition target region setting unit, a recognition target region adding unit, and a character recognizing unit. The recognition target region setting unit sets a recognition target region within the displayed image data to recognize characters. The recognition target region adding unit adds a new recognition target region based on the recognition target region set by the recognition target region setting unit. The character recognizing unit performs character recognition in the recognition target regions.

The image processing unit 9 is capable of instructing the output of the image data sent from the PC 43. The HDD 23 is connected to the image processing unit 9 and is capable of storing the image data to be delivered. The image forming unit is capable of receiving the instruction from the image processing unit 9 and delivering onto paper or the like the image data stored in the HDD 23. Then, when the ID information contained in the image data is detected by the image processing unit 9, writing of image data to the HDD 23 is prohibited.
