    摘要: To seal the top cover of a vacuum travelling web filter, the top cover is lowered, by gravity, with a depending rim fitting against an upstanding rim of a filtrate chamber pan; the contaminant chamber above the filter web is closed off, and supply of filtrate is inhibited. Upon starting of the pump, a vacuum will result within the two chambers, drawing the cover tightly against the filtrate pan and, when a sufficient vacuum has been reached indicative of sealing engagement, supply of contaminant can be opened to draw contaminant into the upper chamber. As the filter cake builds up, further change in pressure in the contaminant chamber will result which, when a predetermined operating pressure level is reached, causes interruption of supply of contaminated fluid, and opening of an air vent valve to dry the resulting filter cake. Sealing fluid can be introduced between the engaging rims of the cover and the filtrate holding pan, between which rims the filter web is interposed, for example by introducing filtered fluid into a groove between the rims, or by introducing an inert gas. Preferably, filtered fluid is used which will be drawn back to the pump upon pump operation. A bypass line of filtered fluid to the pump prevents dry running thereof.

    摘要: Methods and apparatus for purifying water by filtration, according to which water is passed in an upward direction through one or more sand beds supported in towers, at a slow rate of flow so that the sand bed is not disturbed. The sand bed or layer is relatively deep vertically to provide superior filtration. Raw water feed to each tower is accomplished by tangential flow from the inlets. Rapid backwash of the sand bed is accomplished by opening a dump valve at the lower end of a cone provided at the base of the tower in which the sand bed is supported. Maintenance and control of bacterial activity in the lower part of the sand bed enhances purification of the water by bacterial action. Chemical treatments of the water may be used in conjuction with the filtration, including treatments with chlorine, and with alum (i.e. aluminum sulphate and/or potassium or ammonium alum) to produce a floc, and barium sulphate and/or a drilling mud may be added to assist in removal of the floc by filtration.

    摘要: A trap for use with waste water lines for sinks, laundry tubs and the like has a dip portion for retaining liquids to prevent the reverse flow of noxious gases. The lower wall of the dip portion has an opening which is smaller than the interior diameter of the trap and which is adapted to receive a closure plug. A plug for closing the opening is arranged to support a blocking member in the interior of the dip portion of the trap. The blocking member comprises a plurality of flexible fingers which are held in spaced apart relationship on a toroid such that the exterior surfaces of the fingers taper outwardly from the supporting toroid to dimension such that the fingers in combination form a circle which approximates the interior diameter of the trap and the fingers then taper inwardly until the tips of the fingers in combination define a circle of approximately the same dimension as the toroid. The flexible fingers permit the blocking member to be inserted in the trap through the relatively small opening in the dip portion. When in place within the trap, the fingers flex outwardly and the blocking member substantially covers the cross section of the trap in a plane perpendicular to the direction of liquid flow.

    摘要: A valve is presented which enables progressively switching from a first fiber screen pack to another without interrupting the continuous flow of filtrate at the exit of the filter installation. A characteristic feature of the invention is that no countercurrent flow in the conduits is built-up, so that the pressure in the installation is kept within reasonable limits. The structure of the valve also permits an easy air-draining of the filter to be inserted in the conduit. The conical form of the valve member guarantees leak-proof operation, notwithstanding high temperature and pressure which may be present in the installation.
