A clamp collar assembly connects corresponding peripheral surfaces of the last barrel to the die body, and comprises a closed position that connects the last barrel to the die body and an open position that permits separation of the last barrel and the die body. Further, a pivot assembly pivotally supports the clamp collar assembly for movement in a first direction and a second direction and the die body for movement in the second direction. The die body and the die plate are pivotable away from the last barrel when the clamp collar assembly has been pivoted to the open position.

An improved continuous large area polymer filter employs a single valve to control molten polymer flow into and out from at least two but preferably three or more filter assemblies. In a neutral position the valve apportions flow equally to each of the filter assemblies. When filters in any one of the assemblies becomes clogged and requires cleaning or replacement, the valve is repositioned to prevent flow into and out from the clogged assembly while continuing to apportion flow among the remaining assemblies. A small amount of polymer is bled from the selected assembly to effect depressurization and the assembly is removed, restored to function and replaced. The valve is repositioned to allow a slow bleeding of polymer into the restored assembly and the bleed valve is opened to allow air and air entrapped polymer to be removed from the assembly before returning it to service. When the bleed valve flow has stabilized the valve is once again repositioned to allow full flow into and out from the serviced assembly and to apportion flow to each assembly. The valve has mechanical stops to prevent flow from being blocked to all of the assemblies simultaneously and a shield is attached to the valve to prevent access to operating assemblies. The shape of the filter cavities is tapered toward the output end to reduce the volume of molten polymer entrapped stagnantly between the cavity and the filter therein.

The invention relates to a screen changer in a system that processes flowable plastic. The screen changer includes an element, such as a portafilter, that is movable between two positions; two hydraulic pumps that effect position change of the screen changer; and a motor that operates both pumps. One pump provides greater flow volume and the other provides a lower flow volume, but with greater pressure. A non-return valve in the supply line to the hydraulic cylinder controls flow to the cylinder that moves the movable element between positions. The volume pump is used to move the movable element when resistance to movement of the screen is low and the high-pressure pump to move the element when resistance is high. The non-return valve selectively enables or interrupts flow from the pumps to the hydraulic cylinder. The screen changer allows use of a non-pressurized hydraulic fluid reservoir.

The plasticized synthetic plastics material flows from the housing (10) of this screw section (11) through a connection channel (15) to a filter (16) and from there through an inflow opening (17) into the housing (18) of a second screw section (19) which conveys the material to an outlet (21). Between the two coaxial screw sections (11, 19), a sealing section (26) is disposed which avoids a by-pass of the filter (16). A baffle member (28) is disposed in front of the inflow opening (17) which forces the synthetic plastics material stream into a hose-formed shape. The baffle member (28) is displaceable with respect to the inflow opening (17) in axial direction and has a cross section which tapers towards the second screw section (19). Thereby the migration path of the gas bubbles from the synthetic plastics material is reduced and thereby degassing via the degassing openings (20) is enhanced. (FIG. 1)
