An apparatus and method for teaching mathematical expressions includes a plurality of four-sided members that represent the variables of factors of a mathematical expression. Each four-sided member has a different area representing a different variable in the mathematical expression. The apparatus enables a math student to visualize the rules that apply to mathematical expressions. The four-sided members include a first side having a first color and a second side having a second color, different from the first color, wherein the first side represents a positive number, and the second side represents a negative number. The four-sided members can be used for teaching by illustration simple multiplication and division, multiplication, division and factorization of polynomials, linear equations including inequations and absolute value, and systems of linear equations.

An educational system for teaching and learning English grammar and syntax comprising a plurality of sets of individually manipulable members, preferably cards, each representing a word. Each set comprises a plurality of identical members and the members from each set are distinguishable with respect to their color and shape taken together from the members of every other set. The color of each member is informative to the student of the use of the member in a sentence. The shape of each member is informative to the student of the type of word that the member represents. Each member either has a word imprinted upon it or is adaptable to receiving indicia. The user combines members to construct sentences. Preferably, the members are cards which are part of an educational kit.

Apparatus for learning information which is classifiable into a plurality of levels of detail comprising a first plurality of information bearing elements each bearing a first code indicium and containing information classified at a first level of detail, a second plurality of information bearing elements, each bearing a second code indicium and containing information classified at a second level of detail, and a third plurality of information bearing elements, each bearing a third code indicium and containing information classified at a third level of detail. Additional pluralities of information bearing elements each bearing a characteristic code indicium and containing information classified at a given level of detail may be provided. Also provided is an apparatus for learning information comprising a plurality of information bearing elements which also bear at least two sequence indicia enabling their ready arrangement according thereto into one of a plurality of desired outline formats which differ from one another.

It comprises, more specifically, on the one hand, n identical parallelepipedic elements and, on the other hand, a transparent parallelepipedic box the sides of which are multiples of the sides of one element and the volume of which is roughly equal to that of n+I elements, the volume of one element left vacant in the box allowing the displacement of at least some of the elements and the value of the multiples being such that at least two of the n elements do not come into contact with edge of the box.

An alphabetic device is set forth to facilitate an initial reading process by providing additional discrimination cues to letters of traditional written languages. Letters of a written language are reproduced on a substrate such as paper, plastic etc. and confined within a zone. The zone, also reproduced on the substrate, is made up of dots, dashes, or lines arranged in regular arrays. A different zone is used for each letter such that each letter is always associated with its characteristic zone.
