Abstract: An educational device and method for teaching statistical concepts such as the normal curve, hypothesis testing for multiple groups and a single sample that includes a box with pegs forming a grid, an entrance zone through which balls can be placed by users through various holes, and a finishing zone through which balls sit in separated chambers on top of a removable stopper track before dropping into a collection bin. Pegs in the grid are offset relative to adjacent rows. The front is transparent. Dropping multiple balls through the center top hole illustrates a normal curve. Dropping multiple balls through different top holes results in multiple approximate normal curves, which illustrates basic principles of hypothesis testing. The use of different colored balls in different top holes further elucidates this concept. The device and educational method by which it is used can be modified to accommodate for different ages and purposes.

Abstract: A system and method for the automatic grading of mathematical expressions includes importing a hand-written answer, converting the hand-written answer to a LaTeX formula, creating a model with noise to compare one or more mathematical expressions, checking the correctness of derivations between the mathematical expressions, applying machine learning and/or state estimation theory to determine the mistakes, and suggesting correct coefficients for the derivation. The system and method may further include identifying the handwriting of students using machine learning to determine whether cheating or copying has occurred.

Abstract: A system for rendering interactive simulations is provided. The system includes an interactive display screen and one or more physical nodes to which users can selectively assign values. The interactive display screen is enabled to provide a visual representation of a simulation for a systemic model which may be driven by one or more mathematical equations. Each model, by way of one or more mathematical equations, has one or more parameters. The interactive display screen is enabled to define one or more node location for each parameter. The interactive display screen provides one-way communication via each node location. As a result, when a node is physically placed on a node location, the one-way communication assigns or configures that node to a simulation parameter. The user may then select a value for that simulation parameter, which in turn influences the simulation being represented on the interactive display screen.

Abstract: A system and method for teaching arithmetic has a plurality of training aides or manipulatives wherein a child/student learns arithmetic facts by executing the method using the system. The physical training aids may include a die (10,12), a factor card (14) and a factor finder member (16). The physical training aids are used with the child where the child creates a multiplication product by rolls of the die (10,12) wherein the child uses the factor card (14) and the factor finder member (16) to identify factor numbers associated with the multiplication product. A game may be incorporated where the child can use the system and method in playing the game.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a division problems education tool. The education tool is in the form of a physical or digital table having a grid including quotient values corresponding to a set of dividends (in a column) and divisors (in a row). More specifically, a top row has numbers spanning a sequential range from at least a second column to a fourteenth column to function as divisors; and a first column has numbers spanning a sequential range from at least a second row to a fourteenth row to function as dividends. A cell formed by an intersection corresponding to a row containing a dividend and a column containing a divisor includes the resultant quotient value of division of the dividend by the divisor. The table includes an indication of repeating and non-terminating quotient digits.

Abstract: A device for teaching counting binary numbers (base 2) includes a frame having a plurality grooves with sliders deployed within said grooves. The device bears a plurality of zero indicia, each indicia aligned with one of the grooves. Extending from the slider is a label “1” which overlays the corresponding zero indicia when the slider is moved to a first end of the groove to indicate that its value is operative. Each of the sliders are labelled in binary progression (1, 2, 4, 8, 16, etc.). In use, the device can teach the 0's and 1's representation of a decimal base number by correlating the visible 0's and 1's on the device with the sum of the numbers displayed on the sliders. In addition to decimal numbers, the device may also be used to convert binary numbers into hexadecimal numbers and other base systems, and to convert binary numbers into text.

Abstract: A system and method for assisted-learning with a portable computing device that includes requesting that a user complete a mathematical challenge by arranging real-world objects in an environment to form an arrangement according to the mathematical challenge, optionally receiving an input from the user that the arrangement is complete, activating a camera of a portable computing device located in the environment with the user to capture an image of the arrangement, wherein the image is received from the portable computing device over a network, evaluating the arrangement using a visual recognition engine to determine whether the arrangement successfully completes the mathematical challenge, and providing at least one of a visual feedback and an audible feedback to the user.

Abstract: A teaching aid for binary programming language contains: a Rubik's cube including six surfaces. Each side has fourth corner pieces, four side pieces, and a center piece which are rotatable. Each of the four side pieces is defined among any two adjacent corner pieces and the center piece, and the center piece is defined among the four corner pieces and the four side pieces. The center piece has a calculation sign, and each of the fourth corner pieces and the four side pieces has a binary number.

Abstract: The arithmetic educational tool utilizes a container having a main chamber and two extended chambers from the main chamber to visually demonstrate addition and subtraction. Objects placed with the container will move from the main chamber into the extended chambers to break the number objects in the main chamber into parts. The container is bifurcated, having the two extended chambers branching off of from the main chamber in a bifurcated portion. A count-control wheel having blocking and receiving sections enables a user to control the movement of the objects between the chambers. The count-control wheel may receive an object in the receiving section and then be turned to move the retained object into one of the other chambers. One or more of the chambers may have an obscuring feature, such as a color or slidably cover, that enables obscuring the number of objects therein.
