Abstract: Apparatus and method for synthesizing a color video signal from a black and white video signal. The various amplitude levels of the black and white signal are separated by threshold detectors to produce separate gating signals during the interval of each amplitude level. Color signals of selected hue and saturation are provided for each amplitude level by modifying the phase and amplitude of the signal provided by a 3.58 mhz subcarrier generator. In the appropriate intervals the gating signals pass the color signals to an adder, where they are combined with the black and white signals to furnish a color composite video signal suitable for broadcasting or recording.

Abstract: There is disclosed herein an electronic system for the production of high-definition color motion pictures for theatrical and television use. The system employs digital video techniques wherein electronic analog video color signals are digitized, and the digital signals are stored. A scene may be played back immediately during shooting for monitoring purposes or recorded subsequently on film for facilitating editing. Desired portions, such as frames or scenes, of the stored digital color picture information may be selected and assembled, and operated upon to provide special effects, to achieve suitable editing, the resulting pictures again being recorded digitally. This resulting recording may be reproduced and electronically color corrected and enhanced and then converted back to analog form for ultimate visual presentation. The analog signals may be used to generate a color film, or the digital signals before conversion may be converted to different scan standards for presentation according to various television scan standards.

Abstract: There is disclosed herein a cartridge for a continuous loop roll of motion picture film, such as Super 8 sound motion picture film. The cartridge includes top and bottom sections, and a turntable disposed between the sections for supporting a roll of film, such as 600 feet in length. One section of the cartridge includes a film guide channel for directing the inner convolution of film from the central portion of the roll to a film gate engaging portion of the cartridge for projection of the film which, after projection, is returned to the outer convolution of the roll. The film guide channel includes a plurality of molded projections which cause the film to be supported essentially solely by an edge thereof to prevent rubbing of either surface of the film thereby preventing abrading and scratching of the surfaces of the film.
