    Abstract: A porous gas bearing is disclosed. The porous gas bearing includes a housing having a fluid inlet and an aperture. A porous surface layer is disposed within the housing surrounding the aperture in a circumferential direction. The porous surface layer is in fluid communication with the fluid inlet. A damping system includes a damping system including a biasing member, the biasing member being disposed in a passageway that extends along the longitudinal direction of the aperture and circumferentially about the aperture, wherein the biasing member is arranged radially outward from the porous surface layer.

    Abstract: Configuration of a communication module based on determination of an idle time metric is described. In one embodiment, signal strength data representative of composite signal strength indicators of a group of frequency channels utilized by the communication module is determined. A composite indicator of the composite signal strength indicators can be employed that comprises multiple signal strength indicators, sampled over time, of a first channel of the group of frequency channels. Respective values for the composite indicator can be assigned in response to comparisons of the multiple signal strength indicators to one or more defined threshold(s). An idle time metric of the first channel can be determined based on a combination of the respective values and a best channel from among the group of frequency channels can be determined based on the idle time metric. The communication module can be updated to communicate via the best channel.

    Abstract: A method for providing personalized comfort to occupants of an environmentally conditioned space includes sensing a pre-adjustment pressure within a variable air volume diffuser, remotely adjusting a position an individually-adjustable directional outlet of the variable air volume diffuser, sensing a post-adjustment pressure within the variable air volume diffuser, and modifying the airflow through the variable air volume diffuser such that the post-adjustment pressure is equal to the pre-adjustment pressure. The variable air volume diffuser includes individually-adjustable directional outlets and a controller configured to regulate air pressure within the variable air volume diffuser when an individually adjustable directional outlet is adjusted. A user device in operative communication with the variable air volume diffuser includes a user interface to remotely adjust an adjustable directional outlet of the variable air volume diffuser to provide personalized comfort for the user. In embodiments, the variable air volume diffuser responds to spoken commands.

    Abstract: An air handling unit for a heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration system wherein the exhaust air is drawn away from the return air flow by one or more fans located cantilevered on a wall of the air handling unit. The one or more fans may be located within an exhaust hood, through which the exhaust air exits the air handling unit. This air handling unit has a shorter length through elimination of an exhaust fan section. The exhaust air may be drawn through an exhaust damper before being driven into the exhaust hood by the one or more fans.

    Abstract: Methods and systems for performing an electronic security assessment of a building automation system are provided. The building automation system includes a controller and a network of electronic devices connected in electronic communication. The method includes requesting, by the controller, an electronic security scan of the controller with a data set of the controller via a secured channel to a cloud-based service. The method also includes initiating the electronic security scan of the controller based on the data set of the controller. The method further includes electronically assessing security vulnerabilities of the building automation system. The method also includes electronically assessing, by the controller, security vulnerabilities of the network of electronic devices connected in electronic communication with the controller. Also the method includes determining a recommendation list for resolving security vulnerabilities of the building automation system based on the electronically assessing security vulnerabilities.

    Abstract: A method extends battery life of a battery powered indoor air quality (IAQ) sensor that includes a IAQ detector, a radio, the battery, and a microcontroller with a memory and a processor. The method includes detecting IAQ at predetermined intervals to provide IAQ levels, and storing the IAQ levels and corresponding timing data in the memory. The method further includes determining an occupancy schedule based on IAQ level patterns and subdividing the occupancy schedule into a plurality of periods. The method further includes determining an occupancy status of each of the periods based on the IAQ levels. The method further includes operating the IAQ detector to sample at an active interval when the occupancy status is the occupied and at an inactive interval when the occupancy status is the unoccupied. The inactive interval is longer than the active interval. The IAQ detector can be, for example, a CO2 detector or a VOC detector.

    Abstract: Example embodiments of the present disclosure relate to an assembly for sealing a rigid pipe, a furnace, and a gasket for use in an HVAC fluid conduit. Some embodiments include a furnace with an inducer blower drawing combustion air through the furnace, and the assembly is used to connect one or more flue conduit(s) and an exhaust pipe. In one embodiment, the gasket used in the assembly includes a tubular body, at least a portion of which is engaged along an inner surface of the fluid conduit, a rim extending outwardly from a tubular body end, and two or more ears extending from the rim, wherein the ears are spaced apart from the tubular body and extend in substantially the same direction as the tubular body. The ears further include a first rib located proximate a distal end of the ear.

    Abstract: Chiller control systems and methods for chiller control use iterative modeling of cooling towers, heat exchangers, and pumps to determine the feasibility of integrated free cooling and the ability to take advantage of free cooling. The control systems and control methods can further include selecting the parameters for operating in the free cooling or integrated free cooling mode to improve efficiency and/or reduce energy consumption when operating in these modes. The models can have inputs and outputs that feed into one another, and converge at a solution over multiple iterations. The feasibility of integrated free cooling can be based on providing cooling to a cooling load process fluid at a heat exchanger. The availability of free cooling can be based on the cooling provided at the heat exchanger achieving a target temperature for the cooling load process fluid.
