摘要: Characterizing atmospheric conditions is accomplished by measuring at least one varying spectral characteristic of sound at a plurality of intervals from a sound source with the point of measurement and the sound source in relative motion and separated by altitude. The spectral characteristic of the sound at each interval is attributed to a path traveled by the sound and a plurality of simultaneous equations is created for the plurality of paths using a second plurality of altitude segments for each path, each segment having a particular vector as a variable on the spectral characteristic, the initial coefficients in each vector assumed based on predetermined atmospheric models for each altitude segment. The resulting calculated vector and the predetermined atmospheric model are iterated for a minimized cost function in a variational analysis to determine the vector for each altitude segment, the vector providing atmospheric properties for the associated altitude segment.

摘要: A magnetically enhanced convection heat sink comprises a heat sink member for dissipating heat from a heat source. A magnetic source creates a magnetic field concentrated at a first location, the intensity of the magnetic field decreasing from the first location to a second location. The heat sink member is positioned within the magnetic field and in a gas flow path between the first and second locations. Gas, having paramagnetic properties, entering the heat sink at the first location is heated by the heat sink member, and as the gas becomes warmer is displaced by cooler gas causing the warmer gas to move toward the second location as it is further heated by the heat sink.

摘要: A timing reference system is provided for correcting inaccuracies in an output of a crystal oscillator experienced by the crystal oscillator during use in a mobile platform. The system utilizes a three-axis accelerometer mounted adjacent to the crystal oscillator on a substrate for sensing the acceleration experienced by the crystal oscillator. An offset generator converts the acceleration measurements generated by the accelerometer to error correction signals. These error correction signals represent the offset values needed to compensate for crystal timing drift due to the acceleration acting on the crystal oscillator thereby allowing the system to produce a corrected timing reference signal.

A movement of the object with respect to the vehicle is identified from the images of the object in the video images. It is determine whether the movement of the object with respect to the vehicle indicates that the object will strike the vehicle. A strike report comprising information indicating that the object will strike the vehicle is generated in response to a determination that the object will strike the vehicle.

摘要: Onboard systems and methods for detection of airborne volcanic ash. One or more cameras are added to an aircraft. Each camera is configured to view a volume of air illuminated by a standard aircraft light, such as a strobe warning light (e.g., located on a wing tip) or a forward-facing landing light (e.g., located in the nose). Each camera is connected to a data processor. When diffuse volcanic ash is present, it scatters light transmitted from the standard aircraft light. Each camera converts impinging backscattered light into digital data which is sent to the processor. The processor processes the data from the camera or cameras to derive a measurement of the backscattered light and issues an alert when the amount and type of backscatter are compatible with the presence of volcanic ash.

摘要: Onboard systems and methods for early detection that an aircraft has flown into a volcanic ash plume embedded within a water vapor cloud having a concentration of a volcanic ash which would be dangerous to an aircraft. The detection method generally comprises the steps of measuring the infrared emission characteristics of a jet engine exhaust and generating a detection signal when the intensity of infrared emissions at or near a spectral peak wavelength exceeds a threshold.

摘要: Presented is a system and method for detecting clear air turbulence comprising an image capturing element, a lens having focal length adapted to focus a scene onto the image capturing element such that the combination of the lens and array of pixels are capable of optically resolving any visual distortions of features in the scene that are caused by turbulent air, and a processor. The processor compares the image with a subsequent image, or a stored image of the scene, to detect a change in refraction of light received from the feature in the scene that is due to turbulence and produces an indication of the area of turbulence in the scene.
