Abstract: Chemically strengthened glass articles exhibiting superior resistance to damage when dropped onto an abrasive surface. The strengthened glass article has a stress profile in which the compressive and tensile stresses within the article vary as a function of the thickness t of the glass article. The stress profile has a first region extending from the surface of the glass article to a depth d1 into the glass, wherein d1≦0.025t or ≦20 μm and has a maximum compressive stress of at least about 280 MPa at the surface, a second region extending from a depth of at least d1 to a second depth d2 and having a local compressive stress maximum, and a third region extending from a third depth d3 in the glass to a depth of compression DOC, wherein d2≦d3 and DOC≦0.15t. A method of strengthening a glass article to provide resistance to damage when dropped is also provided.

Abstract: Methods of manufacturing a glass-based article includes exposing a glass-based substrate having a lithium aluminosilicate composition to an ion exchange treatment to form the glass-based article. The ion exchange treatment including a molten salt bath having a concentration of a sodium salt in a range from 8 mol % to 100 mol %. The glass-based article includes sodium having a non-zero varying concentration extending from a surface of the glass-based article to a depth of the glass-based article The glass-based article has compressive stress layer extending from the surface to a spike depth of layer from 4 micrometers to 8 micrometers. The glass-based article includes a molar ratio of potassium oxide (K2O) to sodium oxide (Na2O) averaged over a distance from the surface to a depth of 0.4 micrometers that is greater than or equal to 0 and less than or equal to 1.8.

Also disclosed are glass-based articles having a thickness (t) in a range of 0.1 mm and 2 mm; and wherein at least one point of the stress profile in a first thickness range from about 0·t up to 0.020·t and greater than 0.98·t comprises a tangent with a slope of from about −200 MPa/micrometer to about −25 MPa/micrometer or about 25 MPa/micrometer to about 200 MPa/micrometer, and wherein all points of the stress profile in a second thickness range from about 0.035·t and less than 0.965·t comprise a tangent with a slope of from about −15 MPa/micrometer to about 15 MPa/micrometer.

A first of the coupling resonances has a half-width half-maximum value that is at least 1.8 times greater than the half-width half-maximum value of a second of the coupling resonances. In aspects, the lithium containing glass article includes a smoothed intensity coupling profile including a plurality of coupling resonances. A second derivative of the smoothed intensity coupling profile at a first of the coupling resonances is at least 1.8 times greater than a second derivative of the smoothed coupling profile at a second of the coupling resonances.
