摘要:
An optical code reading system and method are provided for reading optical codes imprinted or displayed on, or behind, reflective surfaces. The system includes an extended light source, including one of a backlight assembly and a frontlight assembly, emitting an extended-beam light for directly illuminating an optical code, at least one image sensor for sensing light reflected by the optical code and generating signals related to at least one image of the optical code, and at least one processor for processing at least a portion of the signals, generating a decodable image corresponding to the signals, and decoding at least a portion of the decodable image.

An imaging optical code reader is adapted for use in producing video displays and for use in motion detection surveillance using video compression and narrow band width communication links. An optical system including a plane parallel plate may be employed to change the system focal distance.

Processing an analog electrical signal containing information representative of reflected light from indicia including regions of different light reflectivity, wherein the analog electrical signal contains edge transitions corresponding to boundaries between adjoining regions of different light reflectivity of the indicia. The edge transitions of at least a part of the analog electrical signal are analyzed to determine a level of blur in that part of the electrical signal. Based on the determined level of blur, one of a plurality of different techniques is selected for processing that part of the electrical signal to produce a digitized electrical signal in which transitions in the digital level of the signal correspond to boundaries between adjoining regions of different light reflectivity of the indicia.

The disclosure relates to techniques for determining the presence, orientation and location of features in an image of a two dimensional optical code. The techniques are adapted for use in mapping data in an image pixel plane with grid locations in a grid-based two dimensional code to account for size, rotation, tilt, warping and distortion of the code symbol. Where such a code is a MaxiCode, techniques are disclosed for determining the presence and location of the MaxiCode bulls-eye, orientation modules, primary data modules and secondary data modules.

An optical scanner for reading two-dimensional indicia such as bar code symbols and the like includes a scan element arranged to create a two-dimensional raster pattern which may be scanned across the indicia to be read. In order to improve linearity of response in the vertical direction, perpendicular to the direction of the scan lines, the scan element is driven in that direction by a modified triangle waveform in which the amplitude and/or the phase of at least one of the harmonics has been altered. A scanning synchronization signal is provided by a long thin photodetector which is swept by the scanning beam at the left hand end of each scan path. This enables reading of vertically-modulated bar code symbologies such as POSTNET and PostBar.

Document information is encoded in a graphic symbol applied to the document. The symbol is read to retrieve the document information which is then translated into a humanly discernible form different from that appearing on the document. In particular, encoded symbols are used to uniquely identify or memorialize persons named on credit cards.

The exemplary system requires a 2D barcode be located on an object, a portion of which is to be captured in an image. The module size of the 2D barcode is chosen to match the smallest feature to be preserved on the output image. While the target is moving with respect to the imager the 2D bar code is also moving and the resulting image is degraded. The imager will properly decode the 2D barcode only if the bar code is stationary (or moving very slowly) and hence will provide an acceptable image in the region of the 2D bar code.

A method and apparatus for powering a handheld device. The method includes measuring a current withdrawn by the handheld device from a USB port of the handheld device. The handheld device can include a barcode reading arrangement for reading a barcode on a target object. The method also includes withdrawing a supplementary current from an energy storage element in the handheld device if the current withdrawn from the USB port reaches a threshold current value.

A method and apparatus for implementing alerts on a browser running on a portable handheld device is disclosed. The method generates an asynchronous notification action from the server and in response transmits an alert containing a message indicating availability of HTML pages that describe the nature of the alert. The alert is received at a node on a network and translated into the original message. An alert receipt acknowledgment is transmitted to the server. Access to the alert HTML page is provided through a URL containing the appropriate query strings necessary to present the appropriate HTML page. The invention also discloses a wireless local area network (WLAN) adapter associated with a wireless network that receives paging signals from a server on the network and returns an acknowledgment signal back to the server. The invention also discloses a client/server based method of delivering messages initiated by a client. After a connection is established between a client and server, the client requests a message from the server. In response, the server retrieves and returns the message back to the client.
