Abstract:
A method of forming an engine component includes providing a cylinder liner main body having a curved interior wall forming a cylinder bore extending along a bore axis and a curved exterior wall formed circumferentially about the curved interior wall. The method includes disposing a coating layer onto the interior wall and the exterior wall. A cylinder liner is provided that includes a main body and a coating layer disposed on an exterior wall and on an interior wall of the main body.
Abstract:
A method and system for processing an engine block that includes a cylinder liner. The engine block having a first material with different coefficient of thermal expansion than a second material forming the cylinder liner. The method includes providing an insulating barrier to the cylinder liner, and quenching the engine block. The insulating barrier provides a lower cooling rate to the second material forming the cylinder liner than a cooling rate for the first material forming the engine block during the quenching.
Abstract:
An aluminum alloy suitable for casting transmission clutch housings, the aluminum alloy includes about 12 to about 16 weight percent silicon; about 0.0 to about 6.0 weight percent copper; about 0.2 to about 0.5 weight percent magnesium; about 0.1 to about 0.5 weight percent chromium; about 0 to about 1.0 weight percent each of iron, manganese, and zinc; less than 0.1 weight percent each of strontium and phosphorous; and about 0.0 to about 0.25 weight percent other trace elements. Also disclosed is a high pressure die cast article, such as a transmission clutch housing.
Abstract:
A mold assembly for manufacturing a metal alloy casting includes a cope and drag mold, a plurality of sand cores and a pressure core. The cope mold includes an upper portion of a mold cavity. The drag mold includes a gating system, a lower portion of the mold cavity, and an upper portion of a plurality of riser cavities. The gating system is in communication with the riser cavities to provide pressurized liquid metal alloy to the riser cavities. The pressure core has a plurality of protrusions that are disposed in each of the upper portion of the plurality of riser cavities.
Abstract:
A degassing and grain refinement system for a cast aluminum-based component and a method of achieving both hydrogen gas presence reduction and grain size reduction in a cast aluminum-based component. Ultrasonic vibrations are imparted to both the liquid metal travel path from its source to the mold to achieve the reduction in hydrogen gas in the molten metal, as well as to one or more locations within the mold to achieve relatively small and equiaxed grains in the component upon solidification.
Abstract:
A method for relieving residual stress in cast-in-place liners of high pressure die cast (HPDC) engine blocks to prevent cracking in the liners during the machining process. The method includes locally heating up the liners and the surrounding engine block material through rapid induction heating and then cooling down the liners and surrounding engine block material with still ambient air to a predetermined temperature after the residual stress has been reduced to a desired threshold.
Abstract:
A system for inspecting thermal spray coated cylinder bores of aluminum alloy cylinder blocks, the system includes a failure detection apparatus, a heating apparatus, a cooling apparatus, and a control unit in electronic communication with each of the failure detection apparatus, the heating apparatus, and the cooling apparatus, and wherein the control unit includes a memory and a control logic sequence for operating the system.
Abstract:
A method of improving riser feedability in semi-permanent mold casting is disclosed. The method includes providing a first receptacle fluidly connected to a mold cavity and providing a second receptacle fluidly connected to a riser. Further, the method includes delivering molten metal to the first receptacle and conveying the molten metal into the mold cavity through a sprue. Delivery of molten metal to the first receptacle is terminated when the mold cavity reaches a predetermined fill level delivery of molten metal to the second receptacle is initiated. In certain embodiments, the first receptacle and the second receptacle are combined into a single receptacle and the sprue is connected to the mold cavity through a lower runner and is connected to the riser through an upper runner.
Abstract:
A rotor includes a shorting ring defining a plurality of cavities therein, and a plurality of conductor bars each integral with the shorting ring and having an end disposed within a respective one of the plurality of cavities. The shorting ring and each of the conductor bars are formed from an aluminum alloy including a lanthanoid present in an amount of from about 0.1 part by weight to about 0.5 parts by weight based on 100 parts by weight of the aluminum alloy. An aluminum alloy, and a method of forming a rotor are also disclosed.
