摘要: A process for reducing film boiling by keeping the quenchant pressure above the vapor pressure of the liquid quenchant, and/or using a controlled quenchant renewal to more uniformly cool the surface of part at the initial moment of contact and apparatuses to conduct the pressure and controlled quenchant renewal are disclosed. It is believed that these processes will improve the heat treating of parts with intricate geometries to provide predictable part distortion. The applicability of the method to gun barrels, tubes, round rings, and hollow axles is explained.

摘要: A method of making a forged, martensitic, stainless steel alloy is provided. The alloy is a forged preform of martensitic, pitting corrosion resistant stainless steel alloy comprising, by weight: 12.0 to 16.0 percent chromium; greater than 16.0 to 20.0 percent cobalt, 6.0 to 8.0 percent molybdenum, 1.0 to 3.0 percent nickel, 0.02 to 0.04 percent carbon; and the balance iron and incidental impurities. The alloy has a microstructure that comprises a retained austenite phase less than or equal to 2 percent by volume of the microstructure. The method heats the preform to a solutionizing temperature to form a solutionized microstructure. The preform is cooled with a liquid to room temperature. The preform is immersed in a cryo-liquid to transform the retained austenite phase in the microstructure to martensite. The preform is heated to a temperature of less than 600° F. for a time sufficient to form a tempered forged preform.

摘要: A gas quenching method of the present invention includes a first stage (t1 to t2) at which a workpiece is subjected to a rapid cooling by forcibly circulating a cooling gas, a second stage (t2 to t3) at which the circulation of the cooling gas is stopped and pressure is reduced inside the furnace to conduct heat insulation, and a third stage (as from t3) at which the workpiece is cooled again by the cooling gas. At the second stage, the workpiece is maintained at an intermediate temperature that is higher than martensite transformation start temperature, and, during this, temperature throughout the workpiece is made uniform. Therefore, it is possible to achieve a uniform quenching and suppress distortion caused by difference of the cooling speed.

摘要: A quench system includes an enclosure defining a quench chamber sized to receive hot castings, and bulk air fans in fluid communication with the quench chamber and configured to establish a bulk flow of cooling air that surrounds and extracts heat from the hot castings at a first cooling rate. The quench system also includes a pressurized cooling system in fluid communication with a plurality of nozzles within the quench chamber and configured to spray a plurality of a directed flows of cooling fluid onto the hot castings to extract heat at a second cooling rate. The quench system further includes a programmable controller configured to sequentially activate the bulk air fans to cool the casting at the first cooling rate for a first predetermined period of time, and then activate the pressurized cooling system to cool the casting at the second cooling rate for a second predetermined period of time.

摘要: A method for relieving residual stress in cast-in-place liners of high pressure die cast (HPDC) engine blocks to prevent cracking in the liners during the machining process. The method includes locally heating up the liners and the surrounding engine block material through rapid induction heating and then cooling down the liners and surrounding engine block material with still ambient air to a predetermined temperature after the residual stress has been reduced to a desired threshold.

摘要: An injector, for injecting a fuel fluid into an intake manifold or into a combustion chamber of a cylinder of an internal combustion engine, includes an electromagnetic actuator that includes a magnetic circuit. The magnetic circuit includes a solenoid, an internal pole, and a magnet armature that cooperates with the solenoid and the internal pole, and is configured to generate a controlled force action between the internal pole and the magnet armature when the electromagnetic actuator is activated with the aid of an activating current and/or an activating voltage. The injector includes a gap in the area between the internal pole and the magnet armature, and includes a valve sleeve that has either paramagnetic material properties in and outside the area of the gap or paramagnetic material properties in the area of the gap and ferromagnetic material properties outside of this area.

摘要: A chisel includes an elongate shank portion composed of a first steel, and a working end portion composed of a second steel that is different than the first steel. The working end portion is joined to the shank and configured to chisel a workpiece. The joined shank portion and working end portion has been heat treated to cause the first steel of the shank portion to adopt a first microstructure comprising bainite, the second steel of the working end portion to adopt a second microstructure comprising martensite, and the working end portion to have a greater hardness than the shank portion.
