Abstract: Some examples relate to managing multicast scaling. In an example, a determination may be made at a network device whether more than a pre-defined percentage of ports of a virtual LAN (VLAN) are associated with an IP multicast group. In response to the determination that more than a pre-defined percentage of ports on the VLAN are associated with the IP multicast group, a flood filter may be programmed on the network device for the VLAN. A hardware filter previously associated with the IP multicast group may be disassociated.

Abstract: Examples include receiving a recovery signal and access data stored in a centralized database of a networking device in response to the recovery signal. The data may include information associated to past multicast flow events. Additionally, examples include determining a rebuilt multicast flow event based on the data, generating a multicast protocol packet based on the multicast flow event, and sending the multicast protocol packet to a multicast protocol in the networking device.

Abstract: In an example, a network device may receive, from a client device, a multicast query for a service advertised by a host device connected to another network device. The network device is configured as a first Virtual tunnel endpoint (VTEP) and the other network device is configured as a second VTEP in an overlay network. The network device may determine whether a host name, of the host device, corresponding to the service name in the multicast query is present in a resource record. In response to determining that the host name is present in the resource record, the network device may identify, from the resource record, an overlay network path corresponding to the host name. The network device may encapsulate the multicast query based on an overlay encapsulation protocol implemented at the first VTEP and route, the encapsulated multicast query, via the overlay network path, to the host device.

Abstract: One aspect can provide a system and method for selective data forwarding in a multicast network. During operation, a querier router in the multicast network receives, at a first port of, a query-response packet from a network device in response to an all-host query sent by the querier router and add the first port to a port list comprising a number of ports coupled to non-querier devices in the multicast network. In response to receiving a multicast-join message, the querier router can forward the multicast-join message to the ports on the port list comprising the first port except for a port that receives the multicast-join message. Forwarding the multicast-join message to the first port causes the multicast-join message to be received at a second port of a layer-2 switch, which allows the layer-2 switch to forward unknown multicast data packets to the querier device via the second port.

Abstract: A system for enforcement of a set of segmentation policies at a gateway switch of a network is provided. Here, the segmentation policies can indicate which other roles are allowed to communicate with a respective role, which can indicate a set of privileges in the network. During operation, the switch can receive a first message associated with a join request for a multicast group from a host. The switch can also receive a second message comprising data from a source of the multicast group. The first and second messages can indicate first and second roles, respectively, of the host and source. Based on the first and second roles and a corresponding segmentation policy, the system can determine whether the host is allowed to receive the data from the source. If not allowed, the system can prevent the second message from being forwarded to the host from the gateway switch.

Abstract: A system for facilitating efficient multicast programming in a switch is provided. During operation, the system can parse a multicast data structure that can map an ingress interface, a source, and a multicast group to a set of egress interfaces. Based on the data structure, the system can generate a cache that can map an egress interface to an ingress interface indicated in the data structure. Upon receiving a join request via a first interface, the system can look up the first interface in the cache. If the first interface matches a cache entry, the system can identify an ingress interface from the cache entry. The system can then program, in the data structure, a route entry with the first interface as an egress interface and the ingress interface. Subsequently, if a multicast data packet matches the route entry, the system can forward the packet via the first interface.

The network device is configured as a first Virtual tunnel endpoint (VTEP) and the other network device is configured as a second VTEP in an overlay network.
