Abstract: Animals such as pigs which are free to otherwise roam in an alley are confined in the alley against movement past a gate assembly which includes a base with remotely steered and driven ground wheels for transporting the base along the alley floor between the alley sides. A planar barrier extending across the alley is carried by the base along the alley to a location where the animals are to be confined which has side edges shaped and arranged to co-operate with the alley sides and a bottom edge shaped and arranged to co-operate with the alley floor to close the alley against passage of the animals. The barrier can expand transversely to change its size to accommodate different width alleys and may have pivoting panel portions to close off non-vertical areas of the sides of the alley. A clamping arrangement is provided which may be on the barrier itself to engage the alley sides to clamp the gate assembly at the required position.

Abstract: A gate and gate post assembly is provided for use with animal containment pens. The assembly includes a pair of upright posts arranged to be supported spaced apart, each post having an upper support flange adjacent a top end and a lower support flange adjacent a bottom end. A gate is arranged to be supported on the posts in an upright orientation. The gate has a pair of upper mounting pins extending downward from respective sides of the gate adjacent a top end of the gate and a pair of lower mounting pins extending downward from respective sides of the gate adjacent a bottom end of the gate. The upper and lower mounting pins are arranged for slidably engaging into respective apertures in the upper and lower support flanges. A pair of latches, each in the form of a pendulum, are provided for pivotally mounting onto the respective sides of the gate. The latches each include an engaging portion which is arranged to engage the corresponding support flange in an equilibrium position for restricting upward deflection of the gate relative to the post. Deflection of the latch from the equilibrium position allows the gate to be deflected upward for opening the gate.

Abstract: A heating pad for example for animals particularly piglets in a farrowing crate comprises two vacuum formed sheets which lie parallel one on top of the other with a shallow compartment therebetween. A pipe where heating fluid passes into the compartment through the lower sheet and wraps around a number of projections in the lower sheet which extend from the lower sheet up to the under surface of the upper sheet. The pipe is of a flexible elastomeric type resistant to corrosion so that the pad is thus heated by a warm liquid such as water which provides a very simple economic device resistant to damage.
