摘要: A liquid crystal display apparatus is constituted from a display panel including scanning electrodes and data electrodes intersecting the scanning electrodes so as to form a matrix of pixels each comprising at least two sub-pixels at an intersection of the scanning electrodes and the data electrodes; a ferroelectric liquid crystal disposed between the scanning electrodes and the data electrodes and capable of assuming an antiferroelectric first stable state under application of no voltage and a ferroelectric second stable state and a ferroelectric third stable state under application of voltages corresponding to polarities of the applied voltages; polarizing means for discriminating the first stable state of the liquid crystal as a dark state, and the second and third stable states of the liquid crystal as bright states; and drive means for applying voltages to the scanning electrodes and the data electrodes so as to place the liquid crystal in the second stable state at a sub-pixel of the sub-pixels and in the third stable state at another sub-pixel of the sub-pixels when a pixel concerned is placed in bright state or drive means for sequentially selecting the scanning electrodes with skipping of N electrodes apart (N: positive integer) by applying selection voltages of polarities alternating for each selection to successively selected scanning electrodes. The drive means is effective in minimizing differences in transmittance and hue when viewed in an oblique direction to alleviate flickering.

摘要: An optical modulation device comprises scanning electrodes and signal electrodes disposed opposite to and intersecting with the signal electrodes, and an optical modulation material disposed between the electrodes, a pixel being formed at each intersection of the electrodes and showing a contrast depending on the polarity of a voltage applied thereto. The device is driven by a method comprising, in a writing period for writing in all or prescribed pixels among the pixels on a selected scanning electrode, a first phase for applying a voltage of one polarity having an amplitude exceeding a first threshold voltage of the optical modulation material to the all or prescribed pixels, and a second phase for applying a voltage of the other polarity having an amplitude exceeding a second threshold voltage of the optical modulation material to a selected pixel and applying a voltage not exceeding the threshold voltages of the optical modulation material to the other pixels, respectively among the all or prescribed pixels. The duration of a continually applied voltage of the same polarity applied to a pixel on a scanning electrode is 2.5 times the duration of the first phase in the writing period at the maximum.

摘要: A method of driving a liquid crystal display element in which a switching element is provided for each of pixel electrodes arranged in a matrix manner and a ferroelectric liquid crystal is sandwiched between the pixel electrodes and a counter electrode includes the steps of applying a reset voltage for resetting the entire pixel to a first stable state of the ferroelectric liquid crystal across the pixel electrode and the counter electrode, partially transiting the pixel to a second stable state by a tone signal voltage having a pole opposite to that of the reset voltage, and reversing the pole of the reset voltage every predetermined period. Assuming that a state reverse ratio of the ferroelectric liquid crystal is T(V)% when the tone signal voltage is V, a tone signal voltage V.sub.1 after negative resetting and a corresponding tone signal voltage -V.sub.2 after positive resetting satisfy the following relation:T(V.sub.1)+T(V.sub.2)=100

摘要: A liquid crystal cell is constituted a pair of substrates each having an electrode thereon and disposed with their faces having the electrode opposite to each other, a spacer and a particulate adhesive disposed to leave a spacing between the substrates, and a liquid crystal disposed to fill the spacing between the substrates. The particulate adhesive is dispersed at a higher density in a region close to a side of the cell than in a central region of the cell, particularly in a direction of unidirectional alignment axis provided to the substrates. By such uneven distribution of the particulate adhesive, undesirable local thickening of the cell side due to movement of liquid crystal molecules during drive can be suppressed.
