An ignition apparatus for an engine limits the primary winding current of an ignition coil to a prescribed level. The conducting time of drive transistors which control the primary winding current is controlled on the basis of the voltage across a capacitor which is charged by a signal generator. At normal engine speeds, when the primary winding current reaches the prescribed level, current is bypassed around the capacitor by a bypass transistor. When the engine is cranking and the signal generator voltage is low, a switching transistor disables the bypass transistor, and the capacitor is not bypassed, thereby preventing misfiring.

The apparatus includes circuitry for detecting an ion current generated within the engine cylinder immediately after combustion, circuitry 21, 24, 26 for detecting a leakage current occurring between electrodes of a spark plug 14, a first waveform shaper 18 for shaping the ion current into a pulse signal indicating a combustion or misfire event by comparing the pulse signal with a first threshold value for deciding the ion current, the first threshold value being set on the basis of a level of the ion current upon rising thereof, the ion current being superposed on the leakage current, a second waveform shaper 20 for shaping the ion current as detected into a pulse signal through comparison with a second fixed threshold value which is fixed at a value smaller than the first threshold value, and a selector 22 for selectively outputting as the combustion pulse signal either a shaped pulse signal outputted from the first waveform shaper 18 upon detection of occurrence of the leakage current or a shaped pulse signal outputted from the second waveform shaper 20 when no leakage current is detected.

A current limiting circuit 109 includes a common resistor 105 connected at one end thereof to a power supply 101 and at the other end thereof to a plurality of ignition voltage generating circuits 104. an operational amplifier 107 making a comparison between a voltage V.sub.105 across the resistor 105 and a reference voltage Vr which corresponds to a predetermined upper limit current for each power transistor 103 and generating an output signal A of a magnitude proportional to a difference (V.sub.105 -Vr) therebetween, and a plurality of transistors 108 provided one for each power transistor 103 and connected to receive the output signal A from the operational amplifier 107 for limiting a current through a corresponding power transistor 103 in response to the output signal A. The current limiting circuit 107 serves to sense a current flowing through each power transistor 103 and limit it to a predetermined upper limit value to thereby protect each power transistor from damage due to an overcurrent therethrough.
