The plasma display panel according to the present invention comprises a front panel comprising a protective layer and a rear panel disposed apart from the front panel by a predetermined distance. The plasma display panel according to the present invention has the advantage of excellent temperature-dependent panel characteristic. The method for driving a PDP includes a first step of forming wall charges in cells with a set-up discharge using a set-up signal in a first sub-field and erasing the wall charges with a set-down discharge using a first set-down signal to initialize the cells, and a second step of erasing the wall charges with a set-down discharge generated using a second set-down signal different from the first set-down signal in a second sub-field, to initialize the cells. An energy recovery apparatus for a plasma display panel is provided that may include a capacitor equivalently formed at a discharge cell, an inductor, an energy recovery capacitor, switching units and a voltage sustain diode. The inductor may form a resonance circuit together with the capacitor. The energy recovery capacitor may recover energy of the capacitor thus to be charged. The switching units may be installed between the capacitor and the energy recovery capacitor, for controlling a charging/discharging of the capacitor. The voltage sustain diode may be installed between the inductor and a ground voltage source, for preventing a voltage between the inductor and the capacitor from being dropped to a voltage less than a ground voltage.

According to an embodiment of the present invention, an apparatus of driving an AC surface discharge type plasma display panel, which includes X-, Y-, and Z-electrodes for discharge initiation and discharge sustain, includes a central arithmetic logical unit, a reset drive unit, a data drive unit, a scan drive unit, and a sustain drive unit and wherein the sustain drive unit includes a unified sustain drive unit. Accordingly, an apparatus for driving a plasma display panel and method thereof according to the present invention includes the unified sustain drive unit, thereby enabling to raise the drive efficiency, to simplify the circuit configuration, and to reduce the circuit volume.
