Abstract: Methods for estimating the Effective Modal Bandwidth (EMB) of laser optimized Multimode Fiber (MMF) at a specified wavelength, λS, based on the measured EMB at a first reference measurement wavelength, λM. In these methods the Differential Mode Delay (DMD) of a MMF is measured and the Effective Modal Bandwidth (EMB) is computed at a first measurement wavelength. By extracting signal features such as centroids, peak power, pulse widths, and skews, as described in this disclosure, the EMB can be estimated at a second specified wavelength with different degrees of accuracy. The first method estimates the EMB at the second specified wavelength based on measurements at the reference wavelength. The second method predicts if the EMB at the second specified wavelength is equal or greater than a specified bandwidth limit.

Abstract: A test apparatus has at least one optical source, a high-speed photodetector, a microcontroller or processor, and electrical circuitry to power and drive the at least one optical source, photodetector, and microcontroller or processor and for measuring the frequency response of a multimode optical fiber under test. The test apparatus can utilize an optical pulse waveform with a light adapter to measure of the channel under test. It can also uses a correction method to de-embed a chromatic bandwidth of the source from the encircled flux modal chromatic bandwidth. The correction method can use correction functions obtained for different type of VCSELs to estimate the optical channel bandwith when used with VCSEL transceivers.

Abstract: A method for determining if a graded-index glass optical multimode fiber has a refractive index profile that will compensate modal dispersion with chromatic dispersion when used in an optical channel having a multimode vertical cavity surface emitting laser has at least two weighting functions. The functions are used to compute the relative mode group delays over two radial offset regions within the core of the optical fiber. The peak group delay of the of the higher-order fiber mode distribution is less than the peak group delay of the lower-order mode distribution.

Abstract: A graded index multimode fiber and method of producing the graded index multimode fiber utilize a technique of reducing an index profile of the core of the multimode fiber below a standard parabolic index profile. This can be done by changing dopant concentrations in the fiber core over the radius of the fiber core. The result is a multimode fiber having differential mode delay characteristics that are intentionally not minimized. The index profile can be reduced below the standard parabolic index profile over the entire radius of the core, or only for radii above a specified radius.

Abstract: Examples disclosed herein illustrate systems and methods to determine and evaluate the quality of mechanical splices of optical fibers using insertion loss estimation. In at least some of the disclosed systems and methods, an optical fiber termination system may include a reference fiber coupling a light source and a stub fiber of a fiber optic connector, a digital camera sensor and lens to capture images of scattered light emanating from a portion of the fiber optic connector and a portion of the reference fiber both in a field of view (FOV) of the digital camera sensor, and a processor. The processor may analyze digital images of scatter light emitted from at least a portion of the fiber optic connector and the reference fiber to estimate insertion loss at the fiber optic connector.
