摘要： Changes in the tide effects at a given location are measured by monitoring the respective levels of a measuring liquid in two containers which are in fluid communication with one another. The liquid levels are measured by suitable transducers including floats, and result in electronic signals indicative of the respective positions of the floats. A difference between the two signals is either computed or obtained from a differential amplifier into which the signals indicative of the respective float positions are inputted. A change in the difference between the float positions measures a change in the tidal effects at the location. The change in tidal effects is advantageously measured in conjunction with measuring leakage of liquid from liquid storage tanks, such as fuel storage tanks of filling stations, where tide effects occur and must be taken into account. The measured change in tide effects is inputted into a computer which also receives the input of a float containing transducer system measuring liquid level in the storage tank. The measured tide effects are then taken into consideration when the leakage rate of the tank is computed.

摘要： A machine from which a customer can selectably purchase or rent a videocassette or return a previously rented videocassette. The machine comprises a videocassette storage device for storing a plurality of videocassettes in discrete, identifiable locations. A customer identification device, receives information about the customer. A mode selection device enable the customer to select among a vend mode, a rent mode and a return mode, and a videocassette selection device enable the customer to select a desired videocassette to be vended or rented. A customer access device is provided for dispensing the selected videocassette to the customer in the vend and rent modes and receiving the videocassette from the customer in the return mode. A videocassette identification device receives information representative of the identity of the videocassette being returned in the return mode. A videocassette transport device is provided for transporting the selected videocassette from the storage device to the customer access device in the vend and rent modes and transporting the videocassette from the customer access device to any available empty discrete location in the storage device in the return mode. A memory device stores information about the customer, the selected mode, the selected videocassette, and the coordinates of videocassettes and available empty discrete locations in the storage device.

摘要： A tire building drum is described as having, a plurality of radially movable bead lock segments at each end of the drum for holding the tire bead rings during the turn-up operation, a pair of turn-up bladders, and a pair of carriers which work in conjunction with the bead lock segments and turn-up bladders to tension the ply endings of the unvulcanized carcass ply or plies as the ply endings are turned up and reversely wrapped around the tire bead rings to anchor the rings to the unvulcanized tire carcass for further processing.The carriers span the bead seats of the bead lock segments and snugly fit around the adjacent turn-up bladders, so that the bead lock segments, upon radial expansion, pull against and distort the shape of the bladders which react to regain their shape and/or position by pushing back against the carriers to tension the carriers which are in contact with the ply endings and which tension the ply endings during turn-up to eliminate, adjacent the tire bead rings, the formation of voids which entrap air and adversely affect the adhesion between the tire bead rings and surrounding rubber material. A lubricant is provided between the contacting surfaces of the carriers and turn-up bladders to permit relative, unimpeded movement between these two components.

摘要： A motor for driving a rotary drilling bit within a well through which mud is circulated during a drilling operation, with the motor being driven by a secondary fluid which is isolated from the circulating mud but derives energy therefrom to power the motor. A pressure drop in the circulating mud across a choke in the drill string is utilized to cause motion of the secondary fluid through the motor. An instrument which is within the well and develops data to be transmitted to the surface of the earth controls actuation of the motor between different operating conditions in correspondence with data signals produced by the instrument, and the resulting variations in torque in the drill string and/or the variations in circulating fluid pressure are sensed at the surface of the earth to control and produce a readout representative of the down hole data.

摘要： An instrument including a gyroscopic rotor mounted to precess about a predetermined axis in response to pivotal movement of the rotor about a sensing axis, with the rate of precession being measured and being utilized to determine the amount of said pivotal movement above the sensing axis. Two or more such rotors precessing about different axes can respond to different components of the earth's rotational movement, or to other component movements or torques. Differences in the rates of precession of the two rotors indicate the relative strengths of the corresponding components of the earth's movement, and afford a basis for deriving an indication of azimuth.

摘要： In one aspect, the invention is a novel arrangement for applying forces tourns of a vertically extending helical coil which is wound about a support. The apparatus includes a first rigid member extending towards the turns. A second rigid member extends transversely from the end of the first and has a vertically extending face provided with a generally straight groove extending transversely of the turns. A longitudinal passage in the first member connects to the groove to form therewith a continuous guideway for rollable articles. A rigid lug longitudinally movable in the groove is provided with a projection which extends out of the groove and beneath the bottom of a selected turn of the coil. A train of rigid, rollable articles is disposed in the guideway inwardly of the lug. Means are provided for applying force to that end of the train which is relatively remote from the lug, to urge the latter against the bottom face of the selected turn. As a result, that turn is moved upward along the face of the support, establishing a selected spacing between that turn and the previously formed turn of the coil. When upward movement of the selected turn stops, the force applied to the lug immediately translates to a force which urges the above-mentioned grooved face against all of the formed turns, thus compressing them against the support. The above-mentioned first and second members are swingably mounted so that they can be temporarily moved out of the winding path, thus permitting continuous winding.
