In the method of charging a plurality of lithium ion rechargeable batteries, if another battery is attached during battery charging, open circuit voltages of those respective batteries are measured and compared. When the open circuit voltage of the battery attached later is greater than that of the battery being charged, charging of the previously attached battery is suspended and the battery attached later is given priority and charged. When the open circuit voltage of the battery being charged is greater than that of the battery attached later, the battery being charged is given priority and charged.

A motor current flowing through an inverter-driven induction motor is detected when voltage is applied to the induction motor by the inverter operated under a certain condition on the basis of the vector control. The detected current is converted to two components of a current vector in a d-q coordinate system. Motor constants are calculated on the basis of a component in the d-coordinate axis of a voltage reference set for creating the certain condition and the two converted components of the motor current detected at that time, and control constants in a vector control apparatus for the inverter-driven induction motor are set or adjusted in accordance with the calculated motor constants. According to this invention, the control constants in the vector control apparatus can be easily set or adjusted.

A current-circulating cycloconverter includes a positive converter and a negative converter connected in anti-parallel with each other through a DC reactor. A load is connected to an intermediate tap of the DC reactor. When a load current flowing to the load is smaller than a predetermined value, a circulating current flowing through the positive and negative converters is held at a minimum required value. A circulating current is caused to additively flow for canceling a voltage drop produced across the DC reactor when the load current exceeds the predetermined value.

In induction motor driven by a voltage-type inverter, the torque current component is determined by detecting a primary current flowing to the induction motor. On the basis of the torque current component determined, the output voltage and frequency of the voltage-type inverter are controlled. Additionally, the rotational speed of the induction motor is estimated on the basis of the detected torque current component and the speed of the induction motor is controlled such that the estimated speed signal coincides with a speed command signal.

A squirrel-cage induction motor comprises a stator having a stator core and stator windings divided into first and second coils with different numbers of poles, and a squirrel-cage rotor including a rotor core and a plurality of rotor conductors embedded in the vicinity of the surface of the core. The number of the rotor conductors is the same as the average number of poles of the first and second stator coils, which conductors are arranged equidistantly along the periphery. This induction motor, with the construction of a squirrel-cage rotor, permits a variable speed operation without using any special device.

An induction motor is driven by a power inverter. A torque current command is determined on the basis of a difference between a speed command and an actual speed value. A slip frequency command corresponding to a magnitude of the torque current command is determined, and the slip frequency command and the actual speed value are added together to produce a primary frequency command. An oscillator generates 2-phase sinusoidal signals at a frequency coincident with the primary frequency command which are respectively in phase with the flux axis of the induction motor and 90.degree. out of phase with respect to the flux axis. A torque current pattern signal is produced on the basis of the torque current command and the 90.degree.-out-of-phase sinusoidal signal, and an exciting current pattern signal is produced on the basis of an exciting current setting value and the in-phase sinusoidal signal. Output current of the power inverter is controlled by the two current pattern signals. On the other hand, motor voltage of the induction motor is detected, and there are produced a parallel component and an orthogonal component of the motor voltage with respect to an exciting current component which is determined in a control system for the motor voltage. The primary frequency command is corrected by the parallel component of the motor voltage, and the exciting current setting value is corrected by the orthogonal component of the motor voltage.

An induction motor has a multi-phase primary winding (stator winding) and a multi-phase secondary winding (rotor winding) which are connected to each other in opposite phase relation. The both windings are fed with variable frequency A.C. current from a common frequency converter. A position sensor for sensing a rotor position is mounted on the induction motor. The position signal of the position sensor is in phase with an air gap flux between the primary winding and the secondary winding. Magnitude of a motor current is controlled in accordance with a torque command signal indicative of an error between a speed command signal and a speed feedback signal and with a voltage command signal for determining a terminal voltage, and a phase difference of the motor current relative to the position signal is controlled in accordance with the torque command signal and the voltage command signal. In this manner, the torque generated can be varied while maintaining amount of air gap flux and hence the terminal voltage constant.

A control system for a brushless motor is disclosed which comprises an AC power supply, a rectifier circuit including controlled rectifier elements for converting the alternating current supplied by the AC power supply into a direct current, an inverter circuit including controlled rectifier elements for converting the direct current produced by the rectifier circuit into an alternating current, a motor driven by the inverter circuit and a position detector for detecting a signal representing rotational positions of the motor. The controlled rectifier elements of the inverter circuit are fired in predetermined sequence in response to detection signals from the position detector, while the DC output current of the rectifier is continually controlled at each commutation of the inverter circuit at low motor speeds. A predetermined number of signals in synchronism with each commutation of the inverter circuit are included in one cycle, so that the DC output current of the rectifier circuit is controlled for continual operation by the use of signals with different delay times behind the aforementioned signals concurrent with the commutation of the inverter.
