Thus, with a simple control mechanism in which the plurality of three-dimensional mirrors are moved to only the second direction, an apparatus capable of variably compensating for the chromatic dispersion and the dispersion slope independent of each other can be provided.

According to the present invention, for example, a WDM light containing 10 Gbit/s signal lights and 40 Gbit/s signal light arranged on wavelength grids at 25 GHz intervals is branched into two by an input side optical coupler to be sent to two routes. In one route side, only the 10 Gbit/s signal lights are demultiplexed by a 10 Gbit/s demultiplexer and a plurality of 1×2 optical switches, while in the other route side, only the 40 Gbit/s signal lights are demultiplexed by a 40 Gbit/s demultiplexer and a plurality of 1×2 optical switches. Further, the respectively demultiplexed signal lights are multiplexed for each modulating rate by a 10 Gbit/s multiplexer and a 40 Gbit/s multiplexer, and thereafter further multiplexed by an output side optical coupler to become a WDM light. Thus, it becomes possible to arrange signal lights having different modulating rates at arbitrary wavelengths on wavelength grids at predetermined intervals.

The wavelength selective switch sets as a cutoff band at least one of predetermined bands on the low and high frequency sides, narrows a transmission band of the input signal light to be wavelength-multiplexed, deletes an overlapped band of optical spectra, and outputs the transmission signal light, thereby suppressing crosstalk.

After demodulation of the compensated optical signal, error conditions of the signal are monitored and an error signal is output. A band pass filter filters the error signal for a component having a frequency equal to or less than the given frequency. Based on the component and on the control signal, a synchronous detecting circuit generates a compensation amount modification signal. An object of the invention is to provide a control system in which the phase shift between drive signals of an optical modulator can be reliably detected and compensated by a simple configuration. To this end, a control apparatus of the invention, for an optical modulator generating a signal light of a CS-RZ modulation system or the like by two LN modulators connected in series, detects the phase shift between drive signals given to the former and latter stage LN modulators, or judges the phase shift between the drive signals based on intensity information of the electric spectrum of the signal light output from the optical modulator, to control the phases of the drive signals so as to minimize the phase shift. As a result, the phase shift between the drive signals can be reliably detected and compensated by an electric circuit with a simple configuration.

In an optical transmitter of the invention, continuous light from a light source is a (CS)RZ-D(Q)PSK modulated by two optical modulators connected in series, and a part of the optical signal output from a post-stage optical modulator is branched by an output monitor section, and the power of a preset frequency component, excluding a frequency component corresponding to a baud rate, included in an electrical spectrum acquired by photoelectrically converting the branched beams is measured. The relative phase of drive signals applied to the optical modulators is then feed-back controlled so that the power becomes a minimum. As a result, a delay shift due to a temperature change or the like between drive signals applied to respective optical modulators, can be reliably compensated.
