摘要: Microwave photonic devices use light to carry and process microwave signals over a photonic link. Light can be used as a stimulus to microwave devices that directly control microwave signals. Previous optically controlled devices suffer from large footprint, high optical power level required for switching, lack of scalability and complex integration requirements, restricting their implementation in practical microwave systems. Disclosed are monolithic optically reconfigurable integrated microwave switches (MORIMSs) built on a CMOS compatible silicon photonic chip. The disclosed scalable micrometer-scale switches provide higher switching efficiency and operate using optical power that is orders of magnitude lower than previous devices. The disclosed devices and techniques provide examples of silicon photonic platforms integrating microwave circuitry.

摘要: An apparatus comprises: a gain medium configured to be pumped by a pump source; a photonic integrated circuit (PIC) positioned in a laser cavity that includes the gain medium, the PIC comprising a substrate comprising silicon, a plurality of photonic structures, and one or more ports coupling an optical wave into the PIC, and coupling an optical wave out of the PIC; an optical isolator configured to limit propagation of an optical wave in a single direction through the optical isolator; and an output coupler configured to provide an output that comprises a fraction of the power of an optical wave that is incident upon the output coupler and to redirect remaining power of the optical wave around a closed path of the laser cavity, where the fraction is greater than 0.5.

摘要: An electro-optic display comprising at least two separate layers of electro-optic material, with one of these layers being capable of displaying at least one optical state which cannot be displayed by the other layer. The display is driven by a single set of electrodes between which both layers are sandwiched, the two layers being controllable at least partially independently of one another. Another form of the invention uses three different types of particles within a single electrophoretic layer, with the three types of particles being arranged to shutter independently of one another.

摘要: Provided is a display panel, which includes a first LCD panel and a second LCD panel. The first LCD panel is disposed in opposite to and atop the second LCD panel. Each sub-pixel of the first LCD panel is correspondingly aligned with each sub-pixel of the second LCD panel. The second LCD panel includes ferroelectric liquid crystals. Also provided is a display device having such display panel. The invention can effectively enhance the transmittance of the backlight and elevate the luminance, thereby reducing power consumption and saving cost.

摘要: A display device that can display an image and make a background visible even when the image represented by a display gradation value and a transparency gradation value included in an image information signal is not within a displayable range is provided. Even when the image specified by the display gradation value and the transparency gradation value included in the image information signal is not within the displayable range, the display gradation value and the transparency gradation value can be adjusted by prioritizing the transparency gradation value or prioritizing the display gradation value. In this way, the display device can display the image, make the background transparent, and display the image and the background overlapping each other regardless of whether the image specified by the display gradation value and the transparency gradation value is within the displayable range.

The optical semiconductor device has: a first optical waveguide having a plurality of segments each of which has a diffraction grating region with a diffraction grating and a space portion coupled to the diffraction grating region, having two ends interposed between the diffraction grating regions, and having a constant optical length, wherein at least one of the segments is provided with a phase shift structure; a first phase control device for adjusting a phase of light in each segment with the phase shift structure; and a second phase control device for adjusting a phase of light in each segment without the phase shift structure.

摘要: A solid-state laser system may include a first solid-state laser unit, a second solid-state laser unit, a wavelength conversion system, a wavelength detector, and a wavelength controller. The wavelength conversion system may receive a first pulsed laser light beam with a first wavelength and a second pulsed laser light beam with a second wavelength, and output a third pulsed laser light beam with a third wavelength converted from the first and second wavelengths. The wavelength controller may control the first solid-state laser unit to vary the first wavelength on a condition that an absolute value of a difference between a value of a target wavelength and a value of the third wavelength detected by the wavelength detector is equal to or less than a predetermined value, and control the second solid-state laser unit to vary the second wavelength on a condition that the absolute value exceeds the predetermined value.

摘要: An optical phase modulator includes an input source that is configured to receive a light source. There is an output operative to provide a phase modulated output signal based on the received light source. There is a first optical coupler configured to split the light source into a first optical path of a Mach Zehnder Interferometer (MZI) and a second optical path of the MZI. A static phase shifter is configured to provide a static phase shift to the first optical path. There is a phase modulator in the second optical path. There is a second optical coupler configured to combine the first optical path and the second optical path. The first and second optical couplers are tuned such that the phase modulated optical signal at the output provides a substantially constant amplitude that is independent of a change in loss introduced by the phase modulator.
