Abstract: An continuous ink jet printer projects a stream of evenly spaced ink drops toward a substrate and controls placement of the ink drops on the substrate by selectively charging the individual ink drops and passing the charged ink drops through an electric field to control placement of said charged ink drops on a substrate. The printer may be used to print either single or multiple lines of print in a single stroke. A stroke consists of a single column from all lines and can have adjacent drops printed in alternating lines to reduce drop interaction. Each line of print in the stroke having N virtual print positions, at least some of which are being divided into pairs of adjacent positions. Each pair of adjacent positions has a first print position and a second print position. The printer includes a controller having a plurality of first and second look-up tables, each of which is associated with a different one of said pairs of adjacent print positions. Each of the look-up tables contains a plurality of charge values which correspond to the charge to be applied to a print drop in one of the first or second print positions, respectively, as a function of the charges of each of a predetermined number of drops that are proximate to the print drop in the drop stream. The adjacent drops may include a predetermined number of history drops that precede the print drop in the stream and a predetermined number of future drops that follow the print drop in the stream. The controller determines the charge to be applied to drops and produces a control signal responsive thereto by (1) retrieving a charge value from one of the first look-up tables if the drop is to be printed in one of the first print positions, or (2) retrieving a charge value from one of the second look-up tables if the drop is to be printed in one of the second print drop positions. A charging tunnel receives the control signal from the controller and charges the drops to the determined charges in response thereto.

Abstract: Disclosed is an ink composition suitable for ink jet printing comprising a luminescent compound, a solvent, and an energy active compound, and optionally a non-luminescent colorant. The energy active compound, when exposed to energy, generates one or more active species that can react with the luminescent compound to alter one or more of the characteristics of the luminescent compound. The luminescent compound can be colored or colorless. Also disclosed is a method for marking substrates comprising providing a mark comprising a luminescent compound and an energy active compound. Further disclosed is a jet ink composition suitable for printing on substrates authentication or security marks which can be rendered unreadable. The luminescence of the mark is quenched and the visible color is changed when irradiated with a light.

Abstract: A system having a plurality of marking and/or coding devices and a computing system coupled to the devices and having processor configured to: receive sensor data associated with each device; and store printer metadata and batch job metadata in a backup file for each device. The processor is configured to classify a fault condition of a respective one device based on one or more of received sensor data, device self-test data, current operational data and historical device condition data. The processor is configured to determine autonomously a repair process recommendation in response to the classified fault condition and based on an estimated time to repair (ETR) the device using a self-repair recovery process relative to a line recovery time (LRT) threshold. The processor is configured to recommend as the repair process recommendation the self-repair recovery process in response to the ETR being less than or equal to the LRT threshold.

Abstract: A method of operating a transfer printer configured to transfer ink from a printer ribbon to a substrate which is transported along a predetermined substrate path adjacent to the printer. The printer comprises a tape drive comprising two tape drive motors, two tape spool supports on which said spools of ribbon may be mounted, each spool being drivable by a respective one of said motors. The printer further comprises a printhead being displaceable towards and away from the predetermined substrate path and being arranged to, during printing, contact one side of the ribbon to press an opposite side of the ribbon into contact with a substrate on the predetermined substrate path, and a printing surface. The printer further comprises a controller configured to control the tape drive to transport ribbon between the first and second ribbon spools. The method comprises controlling the tape drive to perform a ribbon movement in which ribbon is transported between first and second ribbon spools along a ribbon path, the ribbon path having a first length during a first part of said ribbon movement, and a second length during a second part of said ribbon movement, a transition from the first length to the second length being caused by a displacement of the printhead with respect to the printing surface, wherein control of at least one of the tape drive motors is based upon data indicative of the first and second lengths.
