摘要: Traction devices, systems, and methods for their use provide simultaneous axial distraction and one of flexion, extension, or lateral flexion of the spine. The devices permit aligning at least a portion of the spine prior to traction. Traction is applied through air chambers configured and dimensioned to independently apply traction to the chin, and both occipital processes. Spiral traction procedures use sequential inflation of the air chambers, thereby providing axial distraction with spinal joint decompression and simultaneous paraspinal soft-tissue mobilization and/or manipulation. Automated systems and methods are also provided.

摘要: A field splinting device that can also be used instead of a fiberglass or cardboard cast for injured limbs, particularly severe sprains and fractures is proposed. The device is waterproof and is radiotranslucent. The device utilizes two sets of multi-layer formable materials, such as fiberglass shims located in pouches in first and second members having re-sealable bladders or sheaths to provide structural support on each side of the limb. Pressurizable-bladders are located to the inside of the formable materials to provide cushioning for the limb, and may be inflated by attaching a small inflation bulb to an inlet/outlet port located at each end of the bladder. Each bladder can be independently inflated or deflated to a desired inflation level. A further embodiment is shown having a single sheet of formable material and a single bladder.

摘要: The present invention is a new method for combining five fundamental methods of orthopedic immobilization into one multipurpose utility, integrated synergistic emergency spline (30) that operates using various integrated synergistic combinations of rigid fixation, soft fixation, inflation-actuated fixation, vacuum-actuated fixation, and traction-actuated fixation methods for strengthening and providing backup immobilization of each single method. Splint (30) is of layered design and function, comprised of an anatomically shaped unibody envelope (32) with a medial long axis monostay pocket (102) for retaining a removable central stiffening monostay (100), and a plurality of self-stowing, orbital compression, isokinetic tensing straps (34a-l) for circumferential closure. Contained within unibody envelope (32) is a stiffening framesheet (94) which provides shape, a malleable support platform, and energy transfer base for detachable traction system (71). Also within is a pliable pneumatic bladder (48) for inflation and vacuum functions, containing a plurality of expanded foam beads (60) that can be rigidified or free flowing for contour padding. Protruding from envelope (32) is a pneumatic control complex (52) which regulates pneumatic pressure with a control valve (74), and safeguards with a quantified pressure relief valve (66). Detachable traction system (71) functions using a kinetic extremity hitch (72) which is connected to a traction tensing harness (74a-b), and affixed to a traction bar (99) to provide dynamic traction when tensed. These layered components and systems combine to provide one multipurpose emergency unibody splint apparatus of dependable anatomic utilitarian design, that provide new integrated synergistic methods of orthopedic immobilization.

摘要: A device is provided for therapeutically treating a desired region of a patient's body with a nonambient temperature treatment fluid circulated through a pliant heat transfer element positioned on the treatment region. In accordance with one embodiment, the device has a fluid inlet line supplying the treatment fluid to the heat transfer element from a fluid reservoir, and a fluid outlet line returning the treatment fluid to the fluid reservoir from the heat transfer element. The inlet and outlet lines are enclosed within a unitary sheath and a manual bulb pump is provided for driving the nonambient temperature treatment fluid between the reservoir and the heat transfer element. In accordance with another embodiment, fluid drive is provided by a motor-driven submersible pump positioned in the reservoir. Temperature control of the heat transfer element is enabled by adjusting the fluid flow rate therethrough. In accordance with yet another embodiment, the device has a pump and a single fluid flow line. A network of valves and fittings are provided in the fluid flow line to enable alternate fluid flow from the reservoir to the heat transfer element and from the heat transfer element to the reservoir.

摘要: A pad is provided for therapeutically treating bodily injuries or ailments by positioning the pad on an affected part of the body and circulating a nonambient temperature treatment fluid through the pad. The pad has a bladder that is a symmetrical planar member configured in sections conformable to the contours of the body, thereby facilitating heat exchange between the pad and the patient. Included are a relatively wide main section and extension section that are fluid-communicatively joined with one another at the axis of symmetry across a relatively narrow connective section. The extension section is oblong-shaped, having a longitudinal axis aligned substantially perpendicular to the axis of symmetry and substantially parallel to the forward and rearward edges of the planar member.

摘要: An impact resistant wrapping system for packaging fragile articles is formed in a sheet by sealing, under pressure, two single or multi-layer or laminated flexible membranes having gas or air barrier properties, with cushioning-cellular material such as sponge foam confined in a single airtight cavity defined between the membranes. The wrapping system is in a flat state in which the cushioning-cellular material is constricted in the cavity. In use, the sheet-like wrapping system is wound or folded around the article and is retained in its wrapping state with fastening members. Air is introduced into the cavity by opening an air valve or puncturing the wrapping system at any surface point thereof, so as to allow the cushioning-cellular material to expand and force the inner of the membranes against the article, whereby the article can be securely protected from shock and damage. After use, by removing air from the cavity formed between the outer and inner membranes through the air valve to constrict the cushioning-cellular material, and closing the air valve or applying an adhesive treated surface patch to maintain the compressed state of the cushioning-cellular material in the cavity, the wrapping system can be reused.

摘要: A fluid pressure actuated immobilizing structure finds particular utility as a reusable, temporary emergency cast. The structure includes a flexible, nonexpandable outer container, a flexible, non-porous inner container and a pressure-sensitive matrix material. The matrix material and the inner container are both housed within the outer container. The matrix material is adapted to permit relatively unhindered relative movement among the matrix elements under normal conditions; the matrix material locks into a substantially rigid mass when squeezed together to freeze the immobilizing structure into the shape existing immediately before pressurization. Since the outer container does not expand, pressurizing the structure causes the structure to turn rigid without squeezing the patient.

摘要: A method of determining the pressure applied to a limb by an inflatable garment by placing a flexible pressurizable cuff between the garment and the limb to receive the compressive garment forces and then determining the pressure in the cuff due to those compressive forces alone. The cuff pressure component due to compression of the garment is determined by extra-polating from a plot of cuff pressure versus bias pressure. The bias pressure is required to obtain an accurate reading of cuff pressure and is eliminated as a component in determining the garment pressure by means of the extrapolation. A preferred transducer for converting cuff pressure to electrical signals employs a manometer tube extending between two plates of a capacitor.

摘要: In accordance with the invention, there is provided a pair of complementary shaped half-shell members fabricated from a tough, relatively thin material such that each half-shell member is substantially flexible about its longitudinal axis yet is substantially rigid about a transverse axis perpendicular to its longitudinal axis. The half-shell members are adapted to be receivably engaged with respect to each other in a diametrically opposed concentric nesting fashion and due to their inherent radial flexibility may be adjusted relative to each other to form a radially telescoped generally cylindrically shaped outer shell structure of selective inside diameter generally conforming to the shape of an injured limb such as, for example, a leg or arm. Disposed interiorly of the outer shell structure is a series of air bags or similar means capable of assuming a normally flattened configuration but which when inflated with air through a valved inlet port are capable of being radially expanded to conform to the irregular shape of the limb or other body part with which each air bag is intended to engage. Means are provided for firmly releasably securing the radially telescoped half-shell members together after they have been snugly fitted relative to each other about the limb or other body part. In an alternatively preferred form of the invention, the two complementary half-shell members are configured to form an outer shell structure conforming generally to the shape of a pair of articulated or conjoint body limbs whereby the two articulated or conjoined limbs are immobilized with respect to each other.
