According to the present invention a latch assembly for use in an adjustable vehicle roof panel assembly including a roof panel which is driven by a motor drive unit and a cable is provided. The latch assembly utilizes a simple mechanical release mechanism which is designed to hold the roof panel in a sealed position and disengages mechanically utilizing the power roof motor instead of having a separate solenoid or motor drive unit. The release mechanism includes a latch arm and a latch catch member which are rotatably mounted so that actuation of the power roof motor causes a release member to mechanically trigger the latch arm causing rotation thereof which leads to disengagement between the latch arm and the latch catch member. Once the latch arm and the latch catch member disengage, a rear end of the roof panel is free to travel with a channel in the base. A front end of the roof panel is raised and guided within the channel by a guide member which is also mechanically linked to the release member so that movement of the release member causes the raising and movement of the front end. Once unlatched, the roof panel is free to move forwardly and rearwardly within the channel so as to open the roof.

A latch mechanism for retaining a sunroof closure panel in a vehicle body roof opening includes a pin projecting from the closure panel and received within a bore of a receptacle mounted on the vehicle body. The pin is bifurcated by a central slot defining a pair of legs. A latch lever is pivoted within a transverse bore in the receptacle and carries a cam member which is received within the slot of the pin and straddled by the legs when the closure panel is lowered into its closed position. Rotation of the latch lever and the cam member forcibly spreads the pin legs into engagement with the bore of the receptacle to latch the sunroof closure panel in the closed position. The pin slot and the cam member may have mating tapers by which an adjustment of the transverse position of the cam member will adjust the extent of forcible spread of the legs to adjust for wear and for manufacturing or assembly variations.

A pair of transverse locking members mounted in the housing are restrained at one pair of adjacent ends against movement with respect to the housing by abutment means in the housing. The locking members are provided with openings through which the rod or bar is passed and at least portions of the locking members containing the openings are normally urged resiliently into operative positions in which they are oppositely inclined with respect to, and lock onto, the rod or bar to prevent relative movement of the panel with respect to the rod or bar only in each of two opposite directions. The engagements between the locking members and the rod or bar are adapted to be released by longitudinal movement of a longitudinal transmission member which is guided in the housing for limited longitudinal movement in a fore and aft direction in response to corresponding movement of a finger-operated control mounted in the panel.
