Abstract: A method of decontaminating metal surfaces in a cooling system of a nuclear reactor comprises conducting a plurality of treatment cycles, with each of the treatment cycles comprising: an oxidation step wherein metal oxides including radioisotopes on the metal surfaces are contacted with an aqueous solution of a permanganate oxidant; a decontamination step after the oxidation step wherein the metal oxides are contacted with an aqueous solution of an organic acid selected from the group consisting of oxalic acid, formic acid, citric acid, tartaric acid, picolinic acid, gluconic acid, glyoxylic acid and mixtures thereof so as to dissolve at least part of the metal oxides and the radioisotopes; and a cleaning step wherein at least the radioisotopes are immobilized on an ion exchange resin; wherein the oxidation step comprises at least one acidic oxidation step and at least one alkaline oxidation step carried out one after another in either the same or different treatment cycles; and wherein the plurality of treatment cycles comprises at least one treatment cycle including a high temperature oxidation step, wherein the permanganate oxidant solution is kept at a temperature of at least 100° C. and, wherein the at least one reactor coolant pump is used to circulate and heat the oxidation solution inside the primary loop, and the residual heat removal system is used to control the temperature of the oxidant solution during the high temperature oxidation step.

Abstract: A method of repairing a braze joint and the resulting joint includes removing an unsuitable portion of a first joining material in a joint between a first member and a second member of an aerospace assembly and cleaning the joint. A stripping solution is used to remove the unsuitable portion of the first joining material. A first cleaning solution is used to clean the joint, and the joint is further cleaned using a second cleaning solution. During a rebrazing step, a second joining material moves into a void left by the removed unsuitable portion from the removal step to form a new joint between the first member and the second member that includes the remaining first joining material and the second joining material.

Abstract: A system for descaling a strip of metal includes a nozzle assembly mounted within a spray box for spraying descaling product on the strip. The nozzle assembly includes a spray chamber; nozzles mounted directly to the spray chamber; and a heater for heating the chamber, the descaling product in the chamber, and the nozzles by conduction through the chamber. The nozzles are oriented to direct the descaling product in a spray against the upper and lower surfaces of the metal strip for an amount and a time sufficient to descale the metal strip. The nozzle assembly is attached to the spray box and can be easily removed therefrom for inspection.

Abstract: For removing and dissolving sand mold residues from cast parts, particularly sand mold residues containing zirconium oxide and titanium oxide, there have previously been used mechanical and electrochemical processes in salt melts. However, these processes are very expensive, attack the surface of the cast pieces or fail to work with sand mold constituents which are difficult to dissolve. These disadvantages are avoided by inserting the cast parts having adhering sand mold residues into a melt of 55 to 97 weight % of alkali metal hydroxide and 3 to 45 weight % of one or more fluorides of an element of the first to third main group of the periodic system of elements and/or zinc at 400.degree. to 900.degree. C. Preferably the salt melt additionally contains a boron-oxygen and/or a boron-fluorine compound.

Abstract: A ferrous metal product to be cleaned is immersed in an oxidizing molten salt bath forming a conditioned scale on the surface of the metal. The conditioned scale is subsequently removed from the metal surface by immersing the metal product in an aqueous caustic bath containing alkali metal hydroxide with alkali gluconate and triethanolamine serving as sequestering agents. The caustic bath may optionally include a brightening catalyst or ethylenediamine-tetracetic acid.
