    摘要: Fiber light amplifiers adapted for high power application are provided. In embodiments of the invention, the light signal to be amplified is coupled to a cladding mode of an active waveguide region which is cladding doped. The optical fibers also preferably have substantial separation between the effective indices of the HOM and any other mode.

    摘要: A multimode long period fiber Bragg grating (LPFBG) for a predetermined wavelength band. The LPFBG formed of a non-photosensitive material having an initial index of refraction. The multimode optical fiber core includes a substantially cylindrical surface, a longitudinal core axis, a core radius, and a number of index-altered portions having an altered index of refraction different from the initial cladding index of refraction. Each of the index-altered multimode optical fiber core has a first transmission surface and second transmission surface that is substantially parallel to the first transmission surface. Also, these index-altered portions are arranged within the non-photosensitive material of the multimode optical fiber core such that the first transmission surface of one portion of the plurality of index-altered portions is substantially parallel to the second transmission surface of a neighboring portion to form a long period Bragg grating structure.

    摘要: Surface profiling apparatus (10) according to one embodiment comprises three long period gratings (LPGs) (12, 14, 16) fabricated in progressive three layered (PTL) fibre (18) and embedded within a deformable carrier member (40) comprising a skeleton (42) provided between two sheets of flexible rubber skin (44, 46). The LPGs (12, 14, 16) are illuminated by three wavelength modulated, narrow bandwidth optical signals, each having a different wavelength and modulation frequency. A photodetector (26) connected to three lock-in amplifiers (28, 30, 32) measures the amplitudes of the first and second harmonic frequency components of the photodetector output signal corresponding to each LPG (12, 14, 16). Similar surface profiling apparatus (10) forms the basis for respiratory function monitoring apparatus (100) in which five LPGs are provided within each of four PTL fibres (104, 106, 108, 110) and embedded in four carrier members (40a–d) attached to a garment (114) to be worn by a subject.

    摘要: A mode coupling device is provided for coupling co-propagating modes in an optical waveguide to provide a gain flattening filter for use with an optical amplifier such as an erbium-doped fiber amplifier. The mode coupling device includes a plurality of long period grating sections having equal spatial periods, with adjacent grating sections separated by an interval of less than 10 periods in length. Also provided is a method for manufacturing the mode coupling device, including a method for determining the parameters of the device and a method for fine tuning the device to provide a loss spectrum closely matching the output spectrum of the optical amplifier. The mode coupling device is useful for flattening the gain of the optical amplifier.

    摘要: The specification describes an optical filter wherein long period gratings (LPGs) are used in a new configuration to provide in-line bandpass filtering of optical signals. In the basic embodiment, two dissimilar LPGs are installed in the optical fiber transmission line. The first LPG converts light, over a broad wavelength range, being transmitted in the fundamental, or LP01, mode of the optical fiber transmission line into light in a higher order mode (HOM) of the optical fiber. The mode-converted signal, with mode LPm,n, is then coupled to a second waveguide, the second waveguide having transmission characteristics different from those of the first. The second waveguide supports propagation of light in a LPm,n mode. The mode-converted signal is then transmitted through a second LPG where the signal over a selected narrow band of wavelengths that is accepted by the second LPG is converted back to a LP01 mode. The selected narrow band in the LP01 mode propagates efficiently over the remainder of the optical fiber transmission path.
