An image-forming apparatus includes: a first unit; a second unit opening and closing with respect to the first unit; an image-forming unit having a photosensitive member, a developing device, and a housing surrounding them; a holding device detachably holding the image-forming unit and attached to the second unit to move between a first and second positions; and an eraser device arranged at the second unit. The housing has a hole for connecting with an outer surface of the member. The eraser device is positioned outside the hole of the housing when the holding device is at the first position in opening the second unit, and in the hole thereof when the holding device is at the second position is closing the second unit. A method, in the apparatus, includes a first unit and a second unit opening and closing with respect to the first unit. The method includes the steps of: detachably attaching an image-forming unit to the second unit, the image-forming unit having a photosensitive member and a developing device therein; providing a hole for connecting with an outer surface of the member; fixedly attaching an eraser device to the second unit; holding the first unit at a first position when the second unit is opened, where the eraser device is confronted with the hole; and moving the first unit to a second position when the second unit is closed, where the eraser device is positioned in the hole.

Before a photoreceptor for an electrophotographic image forming apparatus is uniformly charged at the beginning of a process for forming a latent electrostatic image thereon, the photoreceptor is exposed to charge-removing light for stabilizing the surface potential such that a high-quality image can be obtained. The level of exposure is modified in view of the fatigue and recovery characteristics of the photoreceptor. During a continuous operation of the photoreceptor, the level is logarithmically reduced. When the photoreceptor is started again after a rest period, the initial level of exposure is adjusted by logarithmically increasing it according to the length of the rest period as well as in view of the level of exposure prior to the rest period.

A photoreceptor of amorphous silicon is provided on the surface of a cylindrical drum. A charger, exposing unit, developing unit, transfer charger, separation charger, discharger and cleaning blade are located, in that order, around the cylindrical drum. A light shielding plate is located close to that surface of the discharger where the first-mentioned charger is positioned. The surface of the photoreceptor is charged, while the cylindrical drum is rotated, and then exposed to light to form an electrostatic latent image on that surface. A toner is supplied from the developing unit to the surface of the photoreceptor to develop the latent image into a visual image. The visual image is transferred by the transfer charger to a copying sheet, and the copying sheet is separated by the separation charger off the photoreceptor. Thereafter, the image transfer area of the photoreceptor is discharged by light from a discharging lamp in the discharger and the toner remaining on the surface of the phtotreceptor is removed by a cleaning blade.

A cleaning system for an electrophotographic copying apparatus utilizes an electrostatically active belt which is movable relative to the moving surface of the photoconductive drum. As the electrostatic belt moves past the surface, the electrically charged toner is picked up by the belt and carried away from the drum. At a position remote from the drum, the toner is scraped from the belt, preferably to be reused in later cycles of the system. Preferably, the belt is translucent, and a flourescent lamp is mounted behind the belt to discharge the surface of the drum of the remaining latent image as the toner is removed. Typically, the moving belt incorporates an electrostatic grid having alternating charged portions. These charged interleaved portions of the belt attract the electrically charged toner and hold it to the belt as the toner is moved away from the surface of the drum.
