Each of the chargers includes a magnetic member for generating magnetism, has a holding member for holding magnetic particles by a magnetic force, and charges the image bearing member by bringing the magnetic particles in contact therewith. The magnetic member of each of the chargers has a magnetic pole facing the image bearing member. The second charger is located at the tail end in the image bearing member rotational direction, but before a position at which an image is formed on the image bearing member. In the image bearing member rotation direction, and relative to a position at which the image bearing member comes closest to the holding member, the first charger's magnetic member has a peak magnetic force positioned downstream, and the second charger's magnetic member has a peak magnetic force positioned upstream.

    摘要: An electrophotographic apparatus and a process cartridge have a charge unit for charging the surface of a photosensitive member by direct injection of electrical charge from a contact charging member to the photosensitive member. The charging unit also functions as a unit for supporting residual toner on the surface of the photosensitive member after transfer, for normalizing the electrical charge of the residual toner, and for returning the normalized residual toner to the surface of the photosensitive member. A developing unit also functions as a unit for recovering the normalized residual toner returned to the surface of the photosensitive member. The absolute value of the difference in charged potential between a first rotation and a second rotation of the photosensitive member is higher than 5 V and lower than 70 V. The photosensitive member has a charge injection layer having a specific composition and the charging member supports charged particles having specific characteristics.

    摘要: An image forming apparatus includes a photoconductive element including a conductive support rotatably supported and a charge injection layer and a surface protection layer sequentially laminated on the conductive support. A charger includes a conductive body for injecting, when a preselected voltage is applied thereto, a charge in the charge injection layer in contact with the surface protection layer. A writing unit exposes the charged surface of the photoconductive element imagewise to thereby locally vary the potential deposited on the photoconductive element and electrostatically form a latent image. A developing unit develops the latent image to thereby produce a corresponding toner image. The toner image is transferred from the photoconductive element to a recording medium. Assuming that the charge injection layer has a thickness of D micrometers, and that the potential deposited on the surface of the photoconductive element by the conductive member is V volts in absolute value, then a ratio V/D is confined in a preselected range that does not contaminate the background of the photoconductive element.
