Techniques to improve image quality in holography utilizing lenses made from materials with non-quantized anisotropic electromagnetic properties, such as birefringent materials, to advantageously split an incoming beam of light into two coincident beams with different focal lengths that interfere with one another and thus create holograms free of electro-optical or pixelated devices are disclosed. Corresponding systems, methods and apparatuses are described.

A system and method may utilize holography to facilitate fabrication techniques such as 3D printing and lithography. The system may include a light source, a hologram of an original object or lithographic pattern recorded in a holographic medium, and a target such as a reservoir of photosensitive material or a photosensitive material attached to a substrate. Illuminating the hologram with the appropriate light source may cause a holographic image of the original object or lithographic pattern to form on the photosensitive material within the reservoir or on the substrate. Formation of the holographic image may result in the formation of a new object from the photosensitive material, or may facilitate removal or retention of photosensitive material as part of a lithographic process.

A full-parallax acousto-optic/electro-optic holographic video display includes a control layer and a piezo-electric layer, which includes a substrate and an array of anisotropic waveguide elements. Each waveguide element guides light into a single polarization and includes a horizontal grating, which diffracts light horizontally and comprises surface acoustic waves, and vertical grating, which diffracts light vertically and includes an electro-optic phased array. The surface acoustic waves propagate linearly with the guided, polarized light in the waveguide, converting the polarized light into a leaky mode of orthogonal polarized light. The combination of the horizontal and vertical gratings allows the waveguide element to focus light to multiple points and steer it in order to form a holographic image. The horizontal grating may be generated by interdigital acousto-optic transducers and the vertical grating may be controlled by electro-optic transducers. Each waveguide element may be subdivided into sub-waveguides that form the electro-optic phased array.
