Techniques are provided for obtaining postage at a user system from a central server, for example, a Postal Vendor System (PVS), via a communications network, such as the Internet or an intra-net. A print program processes a markup language, for example, an extensible Markup Language (XML) or a Standard Generalized Markup Language (SGML) message in order to print an indicium or indicia received from the central server.
Abstract:
A web-enabled VBI printing system including one or more cryptographic modules and a central database. The cryptographic modules are capable of implementing a variety of required security standards. A client system is integrated with HTML and provides a user friendly GUI for facilitating the interface of the user to the system. The client system includes wizards that help the user step-by-step with processes of installation, registration, and printing. In one aspect, the invention describes an web-based system for printing a value bearing item (VBI) that includes a client system for interfacing with a user comprising; a GUI for installing software for printing the VBI; a GUI for registering the user in the system; and a GUI for managing the printing of the VBI; and a server system capable of communicating with the client system over a computer network for authorizing the client system to print the VBI.

A method of reissuing digital tokens in an open system meter includes the steps of calculating a digital token using the predetermined postal information including addressee information, postage amount and piece count; debiting postal funds by the postage amount; issuing the digital token for generation of an indicia; storing the digital token and the predetermined postal information as part of a transaction record in a transaction record file indexed according to addressee information; determining that an indicia generated from the digital token has not been successfully printed on a mailpiece for a particular addressee; and reissuing the digital token from the transaction record in the transaction file to generate the indicia for another attempt to print the indicia on the mailpiece.

A system for preparing mail items, the system comprising a general-purpose computer for preparing a document to be sent, a secure metering device connected to the general-purpose computer via a secure link so as to send it postage metering or nullfrankingnull information, a printer connected to the general-purpose computer so as to print both the document to be sent, and at least a destination address for the document and a postage imprint on an envelope that is to receive the document, and a folder/inserter connected both to the printer and to the general-purpose computer so as to receive and fold the printed document and so as to insert it into the corresponding franked envelope.
Abstract:
A secure and reliable method for verifying in the host system that the expected PSD is coupled to the host system includes generating a random number in the host system and encrypting the random number with a PSD state identification number. The encrypted random number is then sent to the PSD. The PSD decrypts the encrypted random number received using the PSD state identification number and sends the decrypted random number to the host system. The host system compares the decrypted random number received from the PSD to the random number generated in the host system. If they are the same, the host system has verified the expected PSD and has also verified that the PSD has not completed any transactions apart from the host system. A method for verifying that the expected host is coupled to the PSD mirrors the method for verifying the expected PSD.

A postage printing system, comprising a computer, a data center and a control system. The computer is in operative communication with a printer for printing a postal indicia on an envelope. The data center is in operative communication with the computer which in turn is located remotely from the data center. The data center includes a plurality of user accounts and a plurality of advertiser accounts where each of the plurality of advertiser accounts includes respective ad data including message data and restriction data. The control system is in operative communication with the data center and the computer and is for: (i) establishing a transaction session between a user of the computer corresponding to one of the plurality of user accounts and the data center; (ii) obtaining recipient address information from the user; and (iii) using the recipient address information and the restriction data from the plurality of advertiser accounts to identify message data available for printing on the envelope in conjunction with the postal indicia.
Abstract:
A system for remotely modifying a mailing/shipping program at a customer terminal includes a mailing/shipping service provider terminal which communicates with the customer terminal over a communications path. The method includes selecting a feature of the mailing/shipping program to be modified, communicating a request for modification of the feature to the service provider terminal, and then communicating activation information to the customer terminal over a secure link to perform the requested modification. The modification may be the activation or de-activation of the program feature. According to another method, a data base of customer information at the service provider terminal is searched to identify customers who might be interested in a newly developed program feature or who have pre-purchased a rate table update service. An electronic mail message embodying the new feature or rate table is then automatically communicated to the terminals of the identified customers for installation.
Abstract:
A system and method for determining a weight of a postal item from information associated with the generation of the postal item. A processor-based system accepts input of information including parameters associated with the context in which the postal item is being generated. These parameters may be accepted directly from a process which is generating the postal item or may be manually input. From these parameters, the system determines attributes of the postal item from which a determination of its weight may be made. The attributes may be specific to postal items generated by a particular user of the system or may be attributes found to generally represent postal items generated in the particular context indicated by the parameters.
Abstract:
The invention is a method for producing a finished mail piece. The method allows a system user to select at a first node, a plurality of characteristics which define a mailing. These characteristics include selection of a document to be printed at a terminal node and a list of addresses to which the printed document will be sent. Once selections have been made, the print job is transmitted to a terminal node which comprises a data processor, an envelope printer, and a document printer among other elements. The document printer will print the document in accordance with the characteristics selected at the first node; and, the envelope printer will print addresses from the address list to corresponding envelopes. Once the document has been printed, it is inserted into the envelope by inserting means to form an unfinished mail piece. The unfinished mail piece is sealed and then franked with appropriate postage in order to form a finished mail piece. The mail piece is then placed into a mail stream for delivery to the destination address. A receipt indicative of the print job and delivery into the mail stream may be optionally generated by the terminal node and transmitted to the first node. Several nodal layers can be created such that the first node can transmit the print job to a second node which can further transfer the print job to subsequent nodes for printing and routing.
Abstract:
In an improved postage scale system, soft-selection keys are used for selecting options including shipping service options provided by the system. The display on such a system is adjustable for comfortable viewing thereof. The system is capable of interfacing and communicating with other devices such as a printer, a remote computer, an optical scanner, an integrated circuit (IC) card, etc. Certain data and code for use in the system can be updated by downloading new data and code from IC cards to the system. A security measure is instituted such that, after an update of the data or code, a system user is required to enter a valid authorization number in order to enable the system. Such a measure is, in part, necessary for deterring unauthorized copying of software of the system onto another similar system.
