A press for punching minute toroids for magnetic core memories from a ferrite web member includes a central die plate disposed between an upper guide plate and a lower guide plate. The ferrite web member is advanced through a slot between the central die plate and the lower guide plate and stamped toroids are ejected through a slot in the upper guide plate adjacent the central die plate. A number of holes extending through the three plates at an acute angle with respect to the direction of web member motion but normal to the plane of the web member each receive a set of ganged punches. Each set includes an upper core rod inserted through the upper guide plate for punching the central disk of the toroid, a lower punch having an outside diameter for punching the outside diameter of a toroid and a central bore coaxially aligned with the core rod for receiving the core rod. The central disks are forced through the central bore in the lower punch and maintained segregated from the toroids.

Electrical terminals are manufactured by stamping, from sheet metal stock, a blank for the terminal, forming a hole in the blank which is spaced from an edge of the blank, and driving a punch through the hole in a manner such that the surface portions of the blank which separate the hole from the edge are reoriented so that they extend transversely of the plane of the blank. These surface portions are utilized as the contact surfaces of the terminal and are substantially greater than the surface area available for contact purposes on the edge of the blank.

The technology includes two-stage cutting processing of, when it is estimated that there is concern about risk of occurrence of an edge crack due to stretch flange deformation on an edge of a material (1) to be pressed in press forming, performing twice cutting processing on an edge including at least a site where there is concern about risk of occurrence of the edge crack as pre-processing for press forming in which there is concern about risk of occurrence of the edge crack. In the two-stage cutting processing, cutting to form a partial, beam-shaped overhang portion at a position including a site where there is concern about risk of occurrence of the edge crack is performed in the first cutting and the overhang portion is cut in the second cutting.
