摘要:
This invention relates to improvements in handling glass sheets during shaping. Each glass sheet in turn is heated to its deformation temperature and conveyed into a glass shaping station. The glass is lifted into engagement with an upper vacuum shaping mold while hot and held against the vacuum shaping mold by vacuum as the glass lifting mechanism retracts downward. A transfer and tempering ring-like member having an outline supporting surface conforming to and slightly inside the periphery of the bent glass sheet is brought into a position below the upper vacuum shaping mold. The vacuum on the upper mold is released to deposit the shaped glass sheet on the ring-like member. In case the outline of the glass sheet is irregular, the shaped glass may become tilted as it falls toward the ring-like member and be deposited in a misaligned position relative to said ring-like member. The present invention provides means for the upper vacuum shaping mold that reduces the tendency of glass sheets of irregular outline to tilt during their transfer to the ring-like member with minimum expenditure of power to insure a non-tilting transfer.

In forming heat-softened sheets by the roll forming method, continuously moving sheets of heat-softenable material, such as glass sheets, are conveyed continuously by spaced rotating cylindrical rolls along a conveyer into a roll forming station, where a set of rotating shaping rolls move transversely upward between adjacent stationary cylindrical conveyor rolls to provide rolling engagement against the lower surface of each moving glass sheet in succession in spaced relation above the level of the path of travel defined by the stationary conveyor rolls for sufficient time to shape the sheets. The sets of rotating shaping rolls move the shaped sheet onto a conveyor that extends through a cooling station. The sheets are flat entering the roll forming station and shaped to a curved configuration on leaving the roll forming station. The upper surfaces of the sheets are not touched during said shaping.

An accent line is produced in a glass sheet by pressing a tubular member against the glass sheet as it is being press bent. The tubular member is heated by passing hot fluid, e.g., air, therethrough.

Apparatus and a method disclosed for use in bending heated sheets of glass (G) transported generally horizontally on a conveyor (16) within a furnace heating chamber incorporate a holder (20) located above the conveyor in a spaced relationship such that a heated sheet of glass can be transported under the holder. Gas such as air is blown upwardly from below the conveyor against the heated sheet of glass such that the sheet is moved upwardly into engagement with the holder. The upwardly blown gas is provided by an array of gas jet pumps (60) positioned below the conveyor. A mold ring (44) is then movable under the holder to receive the glass sheet for bending. Holder (20) is disclosed as including curved and planar surfaces and as including curved and planar rings. A vacuum may be drawn with the holder embodiments having the surfaces so as to assist the upwardly blown gas in lifting the sheet of glass off the conveyor. Vertical movement of the holder facilitates the lifting and also enables the curved surface and curved ring embodiments of the holder to bend the lifted glass sheet between the holder and the mold ring. Gravity bending on the mold ring forms the glass on the planar surface and planar ring embodiments of the holder and can also be used with the curved surface and ring embodiments of the holder. Movement of the mold ring to a quench station after the bending tempers the glass.

An untempered sheet of glass is given a predetermined curvature by means of pre-heated forming dies (3,4 in FIG. 1). The glass sheet (1) is not pre-heated or is heated only to a relatively low temperature prior to being inserted between the dies. Heat transfer from the dies to the glass prior to closure of the dies produces or assists in producing in the thickness of the glass sheet a transitory thermal stress gradient which gives resistance to breakage under bending forces. The absence of high temperature pre-heating of the sheet is conducive to a more predictable stress distribution pattern over the area of the sheet prior to bending. The process enables predetermined sheet curvatures to be achieved with higher degrees of accuracy.

Apparatus for thermally treating glass sheets comprising a combustion chamber, a kiln and a hot gas delivery system for delivering a mixture comprising combustion products into the kiln in such a manner as to avoid deviations from a substantially uniform temperature pattern across the kiln suitable for sag bending and annealing glass sheets. The delivery system comprises a delivery pipe, means for dividing said mixture into two approximately equal flows of said mixture for supplying said flows through a pair of branch pipes, then through the length of a pair of manifolds, each comprising an open ended inner pipe, and a concentric apertured outer pipe. The outer pipes have upwardly directed nozzles of substantially equal cross-section located at approximately uniformly spaced intervals along their length. The mixture flows into the kiln upwardly from said nozzles at a substantially uniform temperature along the length of the outer pipes and blends with the kiln atmosphere to provide a more uniform temperature pattern than is obtained from prior art kiln temperature control systems.

Marginal edge portions of a pair of glass sheets are welded together to make a multiple glazed unit by sequentially imposing a voltage on marginal edge portions of a sheet followed by alternately imposing a voltage on opposed corners of the sheet.

In a glass sheet heating furnace where the glass sheets are supported by edge gripping tongs, means to heat the tongs independently from the heating of the glass sheets is provided so as to reduce the frequency of tong vents in the glass sheets without distorting edge portions of the glass sheets.
摘要:
Disclosed herein is a system for supporting self-closing tongs specially adapted for gripping thin glass sheets (4.5 millimeters and less) during thermal processing, such as that involved during press bending wherein the glass sheets are brought to a sudden start and a sudden stop that promotes swinging of the tongs and its supported glass. The present invention limits the tong swinging so that the glass sheets can be aligned with small tong receiving notches in press bending molds, thereby improving the conformity of press bent glass sheets to their desired shapes.
