In the inclination angle sensing device, the moving member is coupled to the rack and the sensor pinion is engaged with the rack. The sensor pinion has a reflector consisting of a light transmitting and a light reflecting portions, and the optical sensing unit has a portion for emitting a light beam to the reflector on the sensor pinion and a portion for receiving the light beam therefrom. The optical sensing unit determines the amount of rotation the sensor pinion has undergone by the receiving portion thereof counting the number of times the light beam encounters the light transmitting or the light reflecting slices of the sensor pinions during the rotation.

The system further includes a scanner unit for scanning the incremental graduations of the first and second portions, wherein the scanner unit has two groups of scanner elements spaced apart by a greater than the width of the gap. The system has at least one control track parallel to and next to the incremental graduations of the first and second portions. A further scanner element is provided to scan the at least one control track and produce an output signal, wherein the output signal is a function of the absolute position of the first and second portions and controls a switchover from one group of scanner elements to the other group of scanner elements. The absolute position of the first and second portions is derived from the control track over the entire measurement length of the scale and the measurement increment of the control track is greater than the measurement increment of the incremental graduations of the first and second portions.

This device uses one half of a concave mirror having a small aberration and long focal point. Hence, light radiated from a LED disposed at the focal point of the concave mirror has high parallelism. Further, using a plane mirror disposed at the optical axis of a concave mirror, light reflected with the plane mirror from a LED onto the concave mirror travels in parallel rays. Parallel rays, having a large quantity of light resulting from overlapping parallel rays, reflected from the concave mirror directly and indirectly from the light emitting element can be obtained.

Disclosed is a Talbot's interference type optical encoder constructed so as to minimize a measurement error due to a signal distortion. A semiconductor laser is installed so that a vertical transverse mode is set in a direction vertical to a moving direction of a diffraction grating serving as a scale. Further, a stop for regulating light beams from a light source is prepared. An aperture of this stop assumes such a configuration that a dimension in a direction along the moving direction of the scale diffraction grating is set equal to or shorter than a dimension in a direction vertical to the moving direction of the scale diffraction grating. Distortions of signals obtained are thereby reduced. A comparison level in signal processing can be centered on an amplitude of the signal, and, as a result, an occurrence of error can be prevented.
