Abstract:
A helicopter having a lift unit including a multiblade helicopter main rotor system and a nodalized module including a beam driven in response to blade developed vertical forces has a fuselage unit connected to the beam only at vibration nodal points along the beam. The coupling between the lift unit and the fuselage comprises two rigid arms which form the beam and which extend toward one another from the nodal points. A multilayered flexible beam section interconnects the arms to accommodate beam bending in the flexible section. A rigid member is attached to each of the arms at drive points intermediate the nodal points in supporting relation from the lift unit.
Abstract:
The embodiment of the invention disclosed herein is directed to a screw assembly comprising a cylindrical shank having a thread formed therealong and a conical head formed at the trailing end of the shank with slot means formed in the head for receiving a driving tool. An annular flange is formed at the top of the conical head and cooperates with a conical washer to form an annular groove or undercut between the flange and paper surface of wallboard when the screw is driven home firmly to hold the wallboard to support studs or the like. When the screw assembly is fully driven home, it forms an outwardly diverging depression about the screw head with the top surface of the screw head beneath the surface of the wallboard. A quantity of topping compound is applied over the screw head into the diverging depression completely to cover the screw head from view. The annular groove formed by the flange and the conical washer allows a quantity of the topping compound to flow therein thus providing a more secure bond of the topping compound patch so that flaking and chipping will not occur.
Abstract:
An arrangement and method for mounting a handle having a hollow open-ended portion and being formed of a heat-conductive material to a hot liquid-containing vessel including fastening a stud to the vessel, positioning an insulating O-ring about the stud, filling the hollow handle end portion with an insulating, selfsetting, cementitious material, encompassing the stud with the cementitious material-containing handle end portion so as to compressively contact the ring, and letting the material set so as to form a thermally-insulated rigid gripping assembly between the handle and the vessel.
Abstract:
A hand held power tool, for example a chain saw is provided with a transversely extending front handle and with a second handle which extends over the top of the power unit of the tool in a fore-and-aft direction. The fore-and-aft handle is provided with a forward hand grip portion located approximately above the center of gravity of the power tool and a rearward hand grip portion located at the rear of the power unit. An independently operable trigger member controlling the engine throttle is provided for each hand grip portion so that the engine can be controlled by an operator gripping either hand grip portion of the fore-and-aft handle. Moreover, a choke valve operating member is provided adjacent the forward hand grip portion while an onoff switch is located below a median portion of the fore-and-aft handle in position to be operated by an operator holding the tool by either hand grip portion.
Abstract:
1. A method of making a retaining ring for holding a plurality of like antifriction elements in angularly spaced relation comprising the steps of: injecting plastic into a mold cavity defined by a cylindrical outer wall, a cylindrical inner wall concentrically arranged with respect to said outer wall to form an annular cavity therebetween, a first core piece forming a first radially extending wall joining the inner and outer walls, a second core piece forming a second radially extending wall axially spaced from the first radially extending wall joining the inner and outer walls, a first plurality of like angularly spaced radially inner arcuate groove-forming projections attached to the first core piece and extending axially into the mold cavity in axially slidable engagement with the outward cylindrical surface of the inner wall, and a second like plurality of similarly spaced radially outer arcuate groove-forming projections attached to the second core piece and extending into the mod cavity in axially slidable engagement with the inward cylindrical surface of the outer wall, the outer diameter of the projections of the first core piece being substantially the same as the inner diameter of the projections of the second core piece, and the inner and outer projections being in angular registration and in axial overlap; allowing the plastic to set within the mold cavity; causing outward relative axial movement between at least one of the first and second core pieces relative to said inner and outer walls, whereby a like plurality of radially continuous openings are defined in the molded ring at the locations of angular and axial overlap; and removing the retaining ring thus formed from the mold cavity.
Abstract:
In a spectacle frame a leaf spring is incorporated in the vicinity of each hinge to engage the temples in such a way as to press the temples against the wearer and enable the spectacles to be worn more comfortably without slipping and to be more securely retained in position on the head of the wearer.
Abstract:
A TIRE STUD AND THE METHOD OF MAKING SAME. THE TIRE STUD INCLUDES AN ELONGATED METAL BODY HAVING A HEAT AT ONE END AND A SHANK EXTENDING FROM THE HEAD WITH A CAVITY EXTENDING INTO THE SHANK TOWARD THE HEAD. IN MAKING THE COMPLETED STUD, THE BODY IS DISPOSED IN A BORE HAVING A SHANK RECEIVING PORTION AND A SMALLER PROTION WHICH IS GENERALLY OF THE SAME CROSS SECTIONAL AREA AS THE CAVITY AND WHICH EXTENDS UPWARDLY FROM THE CAVITY TO AN OPENING. MATERIAL IS DISPOSED THROUGH THE OPENING TO FILL THE CAVITY AND AT LEAST A PART OF THE SMALLER PORTION OF THE BORE ABOVE THE CAVITY. THESE MATERIALS INCLUDE PARTICLES MADE OF CARBON GRAINS SINTERED TOGETHER BY A BINDER SUCH AS COBALT AND AN ADDITIONAL FILLER METAL POWDER. THE FILLER METAL POWDER IS MELTED SO AS TO FILL THE SPACES BETWEEN THE PARTICLES AND THEREAFTER SOLIDIFIES TO FORM A COMPOSITE OF THE PARTICLES BONDED TOGETHER BY THE FILLER MATERIAL.
Abstract:
A slide fastener installation wherein a pair of fabric sections each has a folded portion and a slide fastener has a pair of carrier tapes, is completed by adhesively bonding each folded portion to its fabric section and each carrier tape to its corresponding folded portion.
Abstract:
Stiffness and shear resistance necessary for a helicopter rotor blade is provided by a first honeycomb cellular structure whose cells extend across the blade thickness and which structure spans at least that portion of the blade chord which includes the longitudinal boundary between a leading edge spar and a trailing edge skin section and a second honeycomb cellular structure joined to the trailing edge of the first structure of density less than the density of the first cellular structure. The front leading edge spar is joined to an upper trailing skin and a lower trailing skin which join at a trailing edge seam. The honeycomb sections are enclosed within the leading edge spar and a tapering chamber formed by the upper and lower skins.
Abstract:
An aircraft proprotor blade having a leading edge spar with upper and lower after body skins secured at their leading edges to the upper and lower trailing edges, respectively, of the spar and coupled together along the trailing edges thereof. Honeycomb body halves are secured to and are substantially coextensive with each skin. The honeycomb cells are oriented substantially perpendicular to the blade chord plane with confronting ends of the cells intercised and adhesively bonded at the blade chord plane.
