Abstract: Techniques are provided for a broadband microwave/millimeter-wave balanced-to-unbalanced transformer (balun). A balun implementing the techniques according to an embodiment includes a first impedance matching network configured to reduce insertion and return losses of a single-ended signal at a first port of the balun. The balun also includes a first planar bifilar coupled transmission line coupled to the first impedance matching network and configured to transform the single-ended signal into a differential signal. The balun further includes a second planar bifilar coupled transmission line coupled to the first bifilar coupled transmission line and configured to compensate for amplitude and phase imbalance induced on the differential signal by the first bifilar coupled transmission line. The balun further includes a second impedance matching network coupled to both planar bifilar coupled transmission lines and configured to reduce insertion and return losses of the differential signal at second and third ports of the balun.

Abstract: A Mid-Wave Infrared (MWIR) objective lens having an F # of 2.64 and a 33.6° angular field of view. It is deployed, with a focal plane and scanning system, on an airborne platform for remote sensing applications. Focal length is 9 inches, and the image is formed on a focal plane constituting CCD or CMOS with micro lenses. The lens has, from object to image, three optical element groups with a cold shield/aperture stop. Group 1 has a positive optical power and three optical elements; Group 2 has a positive optical power and four optical elements; Group 3 has a positive optical power and three optical elements. The objective lens is made of two Germanium and Silicon. The lens is both apochromatic and orthoscopic, and corrected for monochromatic and chromatic aberrations over 3.3 to 5.1 micrometers.

Abstract: An antenna module configured for use on an underwater vehicle is disclosed. The antenna module includes an array of spiral antennas fabricated on a multi-layer substrate that provides wide-band RF communication with direction finding (DF) capability. The antenna module can also include other antennas fabricated on the same multi-layer substrate, such as one or more global positioning system (GPS) receivers, an ultra-high frequency/very-high frequency (UHV/VHF) antenna, or one or more iridium antennas. The antenna module may further include a water-proof housing that is coupled to the outside hull of an undersea vehicle via a coupling mechanism. The coupling mechanism allows the antenna module to rotate between a stowed position against the hull and a deployed position that extends the antennas out away from the undersea vehicle. The antenna module is curved or flexible so it can stow against a corresponding curved hull of the undersea vehicle.

Abstract: Techniques are provided for laser illumination employing closely spaced laser beams. A system implementing the techniques according to an embodiment includes a semi-cylindrical optical block comprising a curved surface and a planar surface. A first laser source to generate a first laser beam directed to the planar surface, wherein the first laser beam enters the optical block at a first angle that exceeds a critical angle, relative to the planar surface, the critical angle causing total internal reflection, such that the first laser beam is refracted through and exits the optical block. A second laser source to generate a second laser beam directed to the curved surface, wherein the second laser beam enters the optical block at a second angle that exceeds the critical angle, relative to the planar surface, such that the second laser beam is reflected off the planar surface and exits the optical block parallel to the first laser beam exiting from the optical block, the separation based on a location of the entry of the first laser beam into the optical block. The separation of the exiting first and second laser beams is controlled by the selected translation distance.

Abstract: Techniques are provided for the generation of a calibration signal for use on an analog to digital converter (ADC). A system implementing the techniques according to an embodiment includes a calibration signal generator configured to generate a calibration tone, located in a first frequency band, in response to a calibration enable signal. The system also includes a signal summing circuit configured to generate an ADC input signal as a sum of a received signal and the calibration tone. The received signal is located in a second frequency band. The system further includes an ADC circuit configured to convert the ADC input signal to a baseband digital output signal and to perform self-calibration, based on the calibration tone, in response to the calibration enable signal. The frequency bands and the amplitude of the calibration tone are chosen to reduce interference between the received signal and the calibration tone.

Abstract: A correlation and track system identifies whether a Radar warning (RW) Track contains one or more emitters by receiving a set of initial Short and Long Baseline Interferometer (SBI) (LBI) detections; receiving inertial navigational data; receiving subsequent LBI detections; determining whether the LBI detections represent one or multiple emitter(s) by designating an initial SBI conic with a multiple of its one sigma conic Direction Finding (DF) accuracy window as containing the emitter; laying down a set of grid points within the SBI conic window as possible emitters' locations; summing real and imaginary values of a residual phase in the form of a unit vector at each grid point for each LBI update; identifying whether there are one or more emitters in RW track based on whether the magnitude of a peak vector is above or below a defined threshold; and invoking geolocation algorithms based on the vector's magnitude.

Abstract: The present disclosure relates to a chaff dispensing system that is provided on an aircraft. The chaff dispensing system includes a container, a dispensing assembly, a controller, and a volume of chaff material. The container has a first end, a second end, and a chamber that extends between the first and second ends, and the second end defines an ejection port. The dispensing assembly is provided on the aircraft, and the dispensing assembly is operably engaged to the container. The controller is electrically connected to the dispensing assembly. The volume of chaff material is disposed inside the chamber of the container. The volume of chaff material is dispensed by the dispensing assembly operably through the controller in metered volumes of chaff material. In addition, a first volume of chaff material may be metered at a first time and a second volume chaff material may be metered at a second time in which the second volume of chaff material is different than the first volume of chaff material.

Abstract: An infrared imaging system is provided. The system includes a sensor configured to receive light emitted by a scene and at least a portion of scenic flux to generate image data, a light source configured to provide calibrating light to offset at least a portion of the scene flux, the light source positioned such that an output of the light source is at a pupil of the infrared imaging system, and at least one image processing device. The image processing device is configured to receive the image data generated by the infrared sensor, determine at least one change in the scenic flux as received by the infrared sensor, determine if the at least one change in the scenic flux results in a change in pixel response of the infrared sensor that exceeds a response threshold, and if the change in pixel response exceeds a threshold, generate an updated calibration table.
