摘要: In accordance with the present invention, an annular insulating core member is formed from an elastomeric material surrounding a plurality of optical fibers and maintaining the group of fibers in a predetermined configuration relative to each other. More specifically, the elastomeric material is characterized by its modulus at room temperature and its bonding to each color identified optical fiber being such as to hold together said fiber configuration while allowing interfiber movement and to facilitate the exposure of the individual optical fibers upon the application of peeling forces between the elastomeric material and an optical fiber without obfuscating the color identification of the optical fibers while providing suitable mechanical properties to maintain the integrity of the fiber configuration. Additionally, the insulating core member may be incorporated into a communication cable by enclosing the core member into a sheath system with an associated strength member. For applications with high strength demands, such as undersea environments, the cable strength members may include a central elongated filament and plural layers of stranded steel wires separated from the central filament by the annular insulating core member, in which the optical fibers are embedded. Furthermore, a metallic tubular jacket preferably surrounds the stranded steel layers to provide both a DC path for powering the optical repeaters and a hermetic moisture barrier for the fibers.

摘要: Containers (20-20) which held UV curable acrylate materials commonly used as coating materials for drawn optical fiber are treated prior to disposal. Because of the presence of acrylate residues therewithin, the container cannot be disposed of in a landfill and has been incinerated. This problem has been overcome by exposing the residue within the container to suitable reproducible radiation determined in accordance with the photchemistry of the residue materials to cure completely the remaining acrylate material and thereby reduce its reactivity.

摘要: An optical fiber (20) which includes at least one coating layer is provided with a color identification system which is nonpigmented. In a preferred embodiment, the optical fiber includes two layers (26,28) of coating materials. Applied over the outer one (28) of the two coating layers is a color identification layer (30). The color identification layer may comprise an oligomeric composition of matter and a polymeric dye. For those instances when relatively high hiding power is required, such as when optical fiber has been provided with a hermetic coating, the color identification system also includes an opacifier. In an alternative embodiment, the outer or secondary coating layer is a composition of matter which comprises the opacifier and the polymeric dye.

摘要: The present invention relates generally to systems and methods for improved electrochemical measurement of analytes. The preferred embodiments employ electrode systems including an analyte-measuring electrode for measuring the analyte or the product of an enzyme reaction with the analyte and an auxiliary electrode configured to generate oxygen and/or reduce electrochemical interferants. Oxygen generation by the auxiliary electrode advantageously improves oxygen availability to the enzyme and/or counter electrode; thereby enabling the electrochemical sensors of the preferred embodiments to function even during ischemic conditions. Interferant modification by the auxiliary electrode advantageously renders them substantially non-reactive at the analyte-measuring electrode, thereby reducing or eliminating inaccuracies in the analyte signal due to electrochemical interferants.
