In a coin sorter of the kind in which coins of mixed denomination are sorted between a rotating resilient disc and a sorting head, stacked coins are broken up and the excess coins recirculated prior to referencing a single-file stream of coins to a fixed radial position and recirculating excess coins that are not properly referenced. By recirculating the coins in these two different circumstances, the breaking up of the stacked coins does not hinder the referencing of the coins, and consequently the possibility of miss-sorting due to stacked coins is reduced and the sorting speed is increased, especially when sorting predominately small thin coins such as dimes. To increase the sorting speed when small thin coins are mixed with large thick coins, the large thick coins are preselected before being referenced together with the coins of other denominations. Preferably, thick coins which are not initially referenced to an extreme outward radial position are recirculated prior to reaching the deflecting wall which breaks up double coins, since such thick coins would otherwise hinder the flow of thin coins.

In the field of coin handling, and particularly coin sorting, it is important to keep different batches of coins separated from one another. A problem arises during the transfer of a batch of coins from a coin tray through an opening and into the coin sorting mechanism, because different batches of coins can inadvertently be mixed if the opening is not adequately protected. To solve this problem, a coin tray is provided that includes a coin holding portion which is adapted to be pivotally mounted on the coin sorter. The coin tray pivots between a coin holding position and a coin transferring position, and has an opening therein which allows coins to pass through the coin holding portion to the coin sorting mechanism. A barrier portion prevents coins on the coin holding portion from entering the opening when the coin holding portion is in the coin holding position. The barrier portion borders the opening, and is preferably stationary with respect to the coin handling machine. When the coin holding portion is lifted into the coin transferring position, the barrier portion allows coins on the coin holding portion to enter the opening because the coin holding portion is higher than the barrier portion. The interior of the barrier portion forms a chute which guides coins through the opening and into the coin handling mechanism.

A coin sorter for sorting coins in terms of their diameter includes a referencing wall engaging the radially outer edges of the coins as they are advanced circumferentially so that the radially outer edges of the coins are positioned at a preselected radial location, whereby the radially inner edges of the coins are positioned at different radial locations determined by the diameters of the respective coins. A series of circumferentially spaced exit recesses are formed around the outer periphery of a guide plate with the radially inner edges of the inner ends of successive exit recesses located at different radial positions for receiving the inner portions of coins of progressively increasing diameter. A ramp at the inlet end of each of the exit recesses slopes from the lowermost surface of the guide plate at the inlet end of the exit recess upwardly to the top surface of the exit recess for easing coins into the exit recess under the pressure of a resilient surface. The ramps preferably have a width that is less than half the width of the exit recess. A portion of the inner recess adjacent the inlet end of the spiral recess, and extending across the inlet end of the spiral recess, is spaced farther from the top surface of the disc than the lowermost surface of the guide plate but closer to the top surface of the disc than the upper surface of any pair of stacked coins carried by the disc.

A gaming system includes a first display configured to display the random outcome of the wagering game, and a second display disposed to overlay at least a portion of the first display. The second display includes a transmissive liquid crystal display defining a transmissive window behind which a corresponding portion of the first display is positioned. The liquid crystal display further includes a polarizing film having a plurality of patterned features generally aligned with the transmissive window. The polarizing film is at least partially removed in the area of the patterned features to enhance transmissivity of the liquid crystal display.

A wagering game system and its operations are described herein. In embodiments, the operations can determine different objects and/or portions within a wagering game video image and split the wagering game video image into multiple video streams containing different parts of the wagering game video image. The operations can then present the multiple video streams on multiple displays. The multiple displays can show the different parts of the wagering game video image appearing as separate and distinct video images. In some embodiments, some of the multiple displays can be placed in front of other displays. The operations can generate transparent masks that allow images to be seen through a display.

A multi-player gaming system sensing multiple simultaneous contacts on a surface of a gaming table, differentiating contacts by different players. Privacy controls selectively display private information visible to only one of the players on or near the display surface of the gaming table. The gaming system also detects physical objects placed on the surface of the gaming table, causing wagering game functions or peripheral functions to be performed as a result of the placement of the object on the display surface.
