摘要： Image data for a margin around the image area of a book form original can be erased and image data for a book center portion are obtained without loss. In a photograph mode, a low threshold value is set in first binary conversion means 4, and image data having been input are binary converted by using this value. Based on the image data having been converted, a first coercion signal generating unit 6 judges a margin around the original image. A high threshold value is set to second binary conversion means 5 and image data having been input are binary converted by using this value. Based on the image data having been converted, a second coercion signal generating unit 7 judges a margin around the original and a portion including a book center portion. A character processing binary conversion unit 3 carries out binary conversion on input image data for the portion within the original, and outputs whitening data which erase the margin around the original. A photograph processing binary conversion unit 2 carries out tone image binary conversion only on the book center portion in the input image data and outputs the data thereof. An image processing selecting unit 10 makes the image data for the portion within the original image selectively output from the character processing binary conversion unit 3 and makes the image data for the book center portion selectively output from the photograph processing binary conversion unit 2.

In a preferred mode, compression and decompression of data and access to compressed data are performed using input/output functions within an input/output function library so that the user need not be aware of the compression and decompression operations and the storage location of compressed data. In a further preferred mode, with these input/output functions it is judged whether a file being accessed is a compressed file or not, and if it is a compressed file, the operation is switched to input/output functions for a compressed file.

摘要： A data compression system is provided having a fixed length coding unit provided before a universal coding unit. The fixed length coding unit detects mode classifications and mode conditions of changing picture elements in a mode detecting unit. Then, the mode classifications and mode conditions are converted to fixed length code words in a code transforming unit representative of, e.g., MH, MR or MMR-type codes. Thereafter, the fixed length code words are predictively coded by the universal coding unit to output compressed data. The present invention is applicable to both character data and picture data. Preferably, the picture data is preprocessed by the fixed length coding unit before both of the character data and picture data are predictively coded by the universal coding unit.

The process includes the steps of: successively receiving monochrome data of original picture pixels in the vicinity of a converted picture pixel; producing data of a line susceptible to disappearance, such data being necessary for detecting pixels along a line in the converted picture which could disappear from the converted picture due to picture conversion; discriminating regions in which the converted picture pixels are located; calculating monochrome data of a converted picture pixel based on the generated data a line susceptible to disappearance, data of discrimination of regions in which the converted picture pixels are located, and monochrome data of the original picture pixels; and producing a signal indicating the monochrome data of the converted picture pixel according to the calculation of monochrome data of the converted picture pixel.
