摘要:
An ink jet recording method uses a recording head capable of ejecting a first ink containing a coloring material with a relatively small particle size φd and a second ink containing a coloring material with a relatively large particle size φp and also uses a specific recording medium including a porous layer and a base, wherein the porous layer has a gap size φh that is larger than the particle size φd and smaller than the particle size φp. The first ink is ejected to the porous layer side of the recording medium and then the second ink is ejected to the same side. The first ink passes through the porous layer to form an image viewed from the base side, and the second ink fixes on the surface of the porous layer to form an image viewed from the recording side.

An ink jet recording apparatus can reduce waste ink produced in marginless printing caused by overflow from an ink absorber. To realize this, each time the marginless printing is executed, the volume of waste ink produced by the marginless printing is cumulatively added up in order to control a total volume of the waste ink. The waste ink volume to be added up is determined by at least the kind of print medium or the print mode.

Printing on an area of a printing medium in which printing locations may be significantly deviated due to inaccurate feeding of the printing medium can be performed, without degrading image quality. Specifically, when lines in this area (second area) are printed using four scanning operations (passes) of a print head, a duty in masking process is set at zero for the scanning operation (pass A) after a change-line operation for feeding the printing medium with a possible large shift feeding error, and is distributed to other scanning operations. Thus, no dots are formed during this scanning operation (pass A), thereby preventing significantly deviated dots from being formed.

The present invention relates to an ink jet printing apparatus which sufficiently heats a head even in a low-temperature environment, which enables a proper image to be printed by stably ejecting ink, and which can be inexpensively and simply constructed. According to the present invention, if the detected temperature of a printhead is lower than a first heating threshold temperature, a heating mode in which the printhead can be heated is set before a printing operation. Further, when the heating mode is set and the detected temperature of the printhead is lower than a second heating threshold temperature, a heating unit heats the printhead. Consequently, even in a low-temperature environment, the heating operation keeps ink in a desired condition suitable for printing.

Simple manual management and easy use are aimed for a system having a printer and an external apparatus such as a digital camera connectable thereto. This aim can be achieved by storing the contents of a manual, an error countermeasure corresponding to an error code and the like respectively of the external apparatus in a memory of the printer or external apparatus in the form of text and by printing out a necessary portion of the contents stored in the memory when necessary such as when a user requests and when an error is detected.

The present invention provides a method of printing a high quality color image with no color variations at high speed. For this purpose, this invention arranges in a main scan direction a plurality of print heads that eject different color inks, and reciprocally moves each of the print heads to perform a multipass printing in which a print operation is executed in both the forward and backward passes. During the multipass printing, the print duties of the print heads are set by mask patterns. Each of the mask patterns divides the print duty setting area for each nozzle group of each head into subdivided areas, sets the print duties of the subdivided areas to values different from each other and sets the print duties of the print heads to different values.

When an image is sensed by a digital camera, image additional information as image sensing conditions is stored together with the sensed image information. Also, information unique to that digital camera is stored together with the image additional information. The digital camera is connected to a printer by, e.g., an IEEE1394 I/F. The printer stores printing control information as various combinations of unique information such as its printing method, the types of ink, the paper, and the like, the print quality and the print speed, and the processing technique, such as masking. In response to a print instruction, the printer reads the image information and image additional information from the digital camera, and selects the printing control information in accordance with the read information and the set printing mode. The printer prints an image using the selected printing control information.

Mask patterns to be used for multi-pass printing make it possible to make a print with a higher quality at a higher speed. Specifically, by performing a swapping process with adjacency forbiddance, two points in the horizontal direction, or the scanning direction of a printing head, are selected in a buffer in which codes for each scan pass are set depending on printing ratios of a gradation mask. Subsequently, codes are swapped between the two points. By this swap, adjacencies between print permitting areas are eliminated in the mask pattern. As a result, when driving frequencies set for the printing head is kept constant, the scanning speed can be doubled at minimum.

An object of the present invention is to appropriately dispense treatment fluid to wipers, and to always wipe ejection-orifice formation surfaces in a favorable state regardless of an environmental change and the like. To this end, in the present invention, a treatment-fluid holding portion holds treatment fluid used in a wiping operation of wipers. When the wipers contact the treatment-fluid holding portion, the treatment fluid is transferred to the wipers. In an environment where the treatment fluid is thickened, the wipers with ink dispensed thereto are brought into contact with the treatment-fluid holding portion to supply ink to the treatment-fluid holding portion. Thus, the viscosity of the treatment fluid near a contact portion between the treatment-fluid holding portion and the wipers decreases, and the treatment fluid is sufficiently transferred to the wipers.
