Abstract:
The present invention is an apparatus for continuously embossing a moving web of material. More particularly, the present invention is a unitary saddle used to mount multiple embossing slugs to an emboss roll. The unitary saddle of the present invention improves slug alignment and thereby reduces the time the converting operation must be shut down for roll maintenance or the pattern changes.
Abstract:
The invention comprises a modular pattern roll for embossing a cellulosic fibrous structure. The pattern roll is made by assembling separate components, rather than being one piece and chemically etched according to the prior art. The pattern roll comprises a cylindrically perforate outer shell having radially extending protuberances inserted through the holes in the cylindrical shell. The protuberances are provided with an interference fit and/or, if desired, a shoulder at the proximal end to prevent the protuberances from being extruded and expelled through the hole and creating a missile hazard during operation. The center of the hollow cylindrically perforate shell is filled with a base roll and a radially expanding internal locking assembly, to prevent the protuberances from moving radially inwardly under the compressive forces which occur during operation.
Abstract:
Disclosed is transfer apparatus for use in an embossing dispenser capable of sequentially dispensing primary and secondary rolls of a sheet material. The transfer apparatus includes pivotally mounted transfer linkage which supports a primary roll contacting surface. Bar means attached to the transfer linkage has a comb projecting therefrom with a wing member extending from each end of the bar member. The transfer linkage is biased for rotational movement to maintain the primary roll contacting surface in contact with the primary roll as the primary roll is depleted. This biasing simultaneously rotates the bar means toward the embossing rollers. As the primary roll nears exhaustion, the wing members engage one of the embossing rollers to thereby position the comb means such that it partially invades the grooves of the embossing roller thereby moving the tail of the secondary roll into contact with one of the knuckled embossing rollers in close proximity to the nip such that the tail of the secondary roll is engaged by the knuckles of the embossing rollers and drawn through the nip. The wing members ensure that the comb means so positions the tail of the secondary roll without the comb interfering with either of the embossing rollers.
Abstract:
An apparatus for sequentially forming a plurality of generally longitudinally extending grooves in the peripheral surface of a filter rod includes a rotatable drum having a plurality of filter rod receiving channels formed in its outer peripheral surface for receiving filter rods to be grooved. The device includes filter rod indexing devices which engage the filter rods in the receiving channels. As the drum rotates about its central axis, the filter rod indexing devices are individually and selectively activated to incrementally rotate selected filter rods about their longitudinal axes through an angle corresponding to the angular spacing between adjacent grooves to be formed in the peripheral surface of the filter rod. A plurality of groove forming rollers are located at selected positions at the periphery of the drum. The rollers each have a plurality of groove forming blades projecting radially outwardly therefrom. A groove forming blade in sequentially positioned rollers sequentially form a groove in the filter rod after the filter rod has been rotated about its longitudinal axes from the position of a previously formed groove by the filter rod indexing device.
Abstract:
A heated roll member especially adapted to provide a uniform temperature surface for embossing or calendering low basis weight cellulose or polymeric webs. The roll member comprises outer and inner shells with an annular chamber therebetween and apertures in the inner shell which introduce fluid into or remove fluid from the annular chamber. Specially constructed apertures, each provided with a flow diverting means, produce fully turbulent flow in a heated fluid moving axially within the annular chamber. A controlled level of turbulence in the fluid is initiated at the aperture and is maintained throughout the annular chamber, such that "hot" or "cold" areas do not develop on the surface of the outer shell.
Abstract:
An apparatus and method for producing synthetic leather comprising the manipulative steps of impregnating, drying and coagulating, shrinking, washing and finally drying a fiberous web.
Abstract:
IMPROVED SOFTNESS, SURFACE SMOOTHNESS AND LIMPNESS IN TISSUE PAPER IS ATTAINED WITH A MINIMUM OF TISSUE PAPER SHEET STRENGTH LOSS. THE TRAVELING TISSUE PAPER, THAT IS CREPED WADDING, IS SUBJECTED TO A NIP BETWEEN A BRUSH ROLL AND A PATTERNED BACKING ROLL AT CONTROLLED RELATIVE SPEEDS OF THE SHEET, PATTERNED BACKING ROLL AND BRUSH. THE SHEET SPEED IS LESS THAN THE PERIPHERAL SPEED OF THE BRUSH ROLL BUT GREATER THAN THAT OF THE BACKING ROLL SO THAT THE SHEET IS WORKED BY THE BRUSH AND PATTERNED BACKING ROLL AS IT SLIPS RELATIVE TO THE PATTERNED BACKING ROLL.
