The invention relates to an apparatus and a method for information processing allowing a personal computer to pick up an image through operation of a single button. When a half-push switch is turned on, a CPU activates a window of an image pickup application program, causing the window to appear in front of the windows of all other application programs. An image displayed in the window of the image pickup application program is held still even if a personal computer is altered in its orientation. When a full-push switch is turned on, the image in the window of the image pickup application program is stored onto an HDD in a suitable format.

A communication device allows a user to get access from the outside via an external public line to obtain e-mail data stored in a device connected to an internal system via a computer network such as a LAN without causing a reduction in security. More specifically, the communication device is connected to a LAN via a LAN I/F and also connected to the public line via a line I/F. If the communication device receives a remote operation command via the public line, a CPU of the communication device gets access to a post office of an e-mail server so as to get e-mail data in accordance with the remote operation command. The obtained e-mail data is converted to facsimile image data and transmitted by means of facsimile to a specified destination.

A printer determines the condition of connection with a peripheral device. When detecting a paper ejector is connected, the printer reads out the model name and the serial number, for identifying the paper ejector, stored in a memory, and transmits the model name and the serial number to a server connected to a network. Then, the printer receives a program for controlling the paper ejector from the server, and writes the received control program into a rewritable nonvolatile memory. The printer executes the control program to thereby control the peripheral device connected to the printer.
