    Abstract: A frame assembly mounted in the windrow discharge area on a swather or windrower on which a plurality of horizontal assemblies, are mounted thereto. On these assemblies are mounted fraying and cutting blades. These blades are operated at a required speed to fray and distort the tips of the stubble and/or cut and reduce the length of the straw of the standing stubble so as to ensure that the supportive strength of the straw is not exceeded by the weight of the swath or windrow placed upon it. This will eliminate any distortion or buckling of the remaining conditioned standing stubble straws. A windrow delivery plate is mounted on the swather frame assembly within the windrow discharge area. This plate assures delivery of the windrowed material onto the swath support fingers which effects a gradual release of the windrowed material onto the remaining standing frayed and conditioned stubble directly behind the frayer conditioners track of travel in the field. The conditioned stubble height is controlled by an axle type gauge wheel assembly.

    Abstract: The cross auger of a corn head for a combine is made up of two independent identical but opposite-hand auger sections, each separately driven and with their inner ends sharing a common central suspension member. The inner end of each section includes a bearing plate which abuts its respective side of the suspension member and engages a pair of support ledges for support and location. A single fastener locks the two auger sections in position. A common central annular shield axially overlaps the inner ends of the tubes of both auger sections. An upper portion of the shield is easily removable to permit the inner end of either auger section to be lifted out of engagement with the support hanger without disturbing the remaining auger section.

    Abstract: A hay-type crop harvester has a chassis supported on the ground on wheels and normally displaceable along the ground in a predetermined travel direction. A crop cutter is mounted ahead of the wheels on the chassis and extends transversely substantially the full width of the chassis so as to cut a swath of crop and pass it backward. A central crop conditioner is provided on the chassis between the wheels thereof and two outer crop conditioners are each provided on a respective side of the chassis to respective sides of the wheels. An auger provided with oppositely directed screwthread formations at each of the conditioners transports the crop laterally so that after being cut in a single wide swath it is subdivided into three portions each of which is fed to a respective conditioner. Thereafter the portions may be laid down in windrows between and outside the wheels of the harvester.

    Abstract: An apparatus for harvesting and windrowing of corn utilizes one or more conveyor units swingably mounted to a corn harvesting implement such as a combine or corn picker and has horizontally moving cutting means carried forwardly of the conveyor units. As the implement moves through a field of standing corn, the cutting means severs the cornstalks as harvesting heads on the implement engage the stalk and strip the corn ears from the stalk. The conveyors receive and transport the severed stalks to a cornstalk discharge location between the conveyor units to create a cornstalk windrow along the path of the traveling implement. Corn plant residue, such as leaves, kernels, ear husks and the like, resulting from husking, are discharged from the implement and guided by deflector plates onto the windrow to be retained there for curing and later pickup. A set of horizontally moving knives having upright pushers are carried by an endless moving chain to sever the stalks between converging knives and to urge the stalks toward the windrow. A method of harvesting standing corn by the utilizing of a windrow is also disclosed.

    Abstract: An impact mower including a guide bar, an endless flexible cutting belt entrained on the guide bar, drive means for driving the cutting belt around the guide bar, and the improvement which comprises a reel mounted above the guide bar. Said reel having end plates that support raking bars. The raking bars are curved to conform to the curved path of the cutting belt as it is driven across the leading edge of the guide bar. Bearing means supporting the raking bars on the end plates fix the orientation of the raking bars so that the curve of the raking bars are always parallel to the curve of the path of the cutting belt and so that tines carried by the raking bar always point downwardly. The reel is pivotally mounted for rotation in a plane offset from the direction of movement of the mower. The tines carried by the raking bars are thus moved angularly toward the leading edge of the guide bar to rake the material being mown into the path of the cutting belt.

    Abstract: Knee action linkage is provided to control the tine bars or shafts for rotating cylinders, drums or the like. The linkage simulates the control action of a cam and is designed to control the tine bars so as to maintain a desired position for maximum pickup and feeding ability. A main or primary link is actuated by an offset crank arm. Attached to the main link are two follower links which interconnect the tine bar and the drum. When the drum is rotated, and because the crank arm is held stationary, a unique tine position relative to drum rotation occurs. The tines are caused to remain extended for a considerable period of drum rotation; then at a certain point in the rotation the tine bars rotate about their axes very abruptly, while the drum continues to rotate only a relatively few degrees. This has the effect of leaving the fingers or tines in an extended position for a longer period of time, which is most desirable and very necessary when applied to pickup reels, feeder beaters, auger conveyors, and rotary windrow pickups. The simplified linkage actuated by a crank arm on a fixed axle eliminates the need for a cam track and cam follower bearings which require lubrication and are very noisy in operation, yet function and finger action are duplicated as when controlled by a cam.
