摘要： Apparatus for sensing the position of an electrically conductive printing band in which the band moves at varying depths within the gap of an inductor in an inductor-capacitor resonance circuit that is periodically energized to induce eddy currents in the band. The oscillatory ringing resulting from pulsing the tank circuit decays at a rate that varies with the magnitude of the induced eddy current and, hence, the depth of the band in the gap. By counting the number of voltage excursions across the tank circuit resulting from an excitation that exceed a predetermined threshold during decay, the position of the band can be deduced. Corrective positioning may thereafter be undertaken.

摘要： A dot matrix printer is described in which the dots are formed by impact at an intersection between a raised ridge on a platen and a vertical ridge or bar font member. A moving belt carries a plurality of individually mounted vertical bar segments. The bar segments are each mounted on a flexible finger and can be deflected out of the path of the moving belt by impact from a print hammer mechanism. The vertical bars may be caused thusly to individually impact against a platen arranged parallel to the line of travel of the fingers. The platen may have a plurality of raised knife-edge ridges on its surface. By appropriate timing of hammer actuations, individual bar elements may be caused to impact against the knife-edge ridges on the platen. If the paper and ribbon are interposed between the bar fingers and the knife-edge ridges, a mark in the shape of the intersectional area between the bar and the knife-edge ridge can be made. If the knife-edge ridges are angled with respect to the direction of travel of paper, continuously moving paper and associated transport mechanisms may be advantageously employed. By appropriate timing of the hammer firings, together with angling of the knife-edge ridges on the platen and selection of paper translation velocity, a linear array of dots may be produced in a single row. Various other arrays of dots in succeeding rows can similarly be generated to build up desired character shapes or patterns. The mechanism reduces or eliminates the shadow printing problem inherent in intersectional printers of the type involved and enables equivalent throughput to be obtained with continuously moving paper with reduced peak power requirements.

摘要： A hand-held printer such as an electronic numbering machine includes a plurality of type carrying belts or a plurality of type wheels. A drive system is associated with the type carrying belts or the type wheels to rotate the type carrying belts (type wheels) in a forward direction. A type selection system is provided for each type carrying belt (type wheel) for stopping the rotation of the type carrying belt (type wheel) when a desired type reaches a preselected position suited for the following type impact operation. After completion of the type selection operation, the type carrying belts (type wheels) are driven to swing in a predetermined direction, whereby the selected types make contact with a print receiving paper. After completion of the type impact operation, the type carrying belts (type wheels) are driven to swing in the counter direction and to rotate in a reverse direction for returning the printer to the initial stand-by condition.

摘要： An improved pulley system for use with band printers or the like. A steel printing band is looped around a pair of capstans covered by sleeves made of elastomeric material. The sleeves include a plurality of downwardly angled flexible circumferential flanges and a lower horizontal rim. The band contacts the flanges and as the capstans rotate, inward force on the band is transferred to a downward force by means of the flanges. The downward force causes the band to move into contact with the lower horizontal rim, thereby vertically aligning the band in the printer. In an alternate embodiment, a plurality of non-flexible circumferential ridges are included. The central ridges extend farther out from the surface of the sleeve and serve to define a crown. The sleeve configuration serves to reduce wear and accurately align the printing band within the printer assembly.

摘要： A variable speed printing (VSP) adaptor for a dot matrix printer which includes a monitoring means having a plurality of devices each capable of assuming one of two states. The monitoring means monitors the state of the pattern data to be printed, and, in the preferred embodiment, the monitoring means comprises a counter which is preset with a number equal to the number of column scans with a dot print line. The pattern data to be printed is scanned in a forward direction, i.e., in the normal printing direction starting at the first print position and the count in the counter is decremented one count for each column data scanned. During the time interval between when this data is latched and the actual hammer actuation, the pattern data is scanned in the backward direction starting at the last print position. Each time the column data for a backward scan is zero, i.e., no dot to be printed, prior to sensing a non-zero column, the count in the counter is decremented one count. The printing operation continues in the interleaved forward/backward scans until the count in the counter reaches a reference level such as zero. Upon sensing this reference level in the counter, a control signal is generated which indicates that the printing of the dot row is complete and initiates movement of the paper to the next dot row position. In an alternate embodiment, the monitoring means comprises a random access storage device.

The band positioning apparatus includes a first sensor for being placed adjacent the edge of the endless loop band for detecting the drift of the edge to one side of a reference line. A microprocessor is coupled to the first and second sensors for generating a correcting output signal to a step motor. The step motor is coupled to a pulley in guiding communication with the endless loop printing band for displacing the pulley toward the reference line, thereby correcting the undesired movement of the edge of the endless loop printing band.
