    摘要: An adaptive parasitic array antenna system having properties of directive gain, self-pointing and interference rejection is provided including an adaptive parasitic array antenna comprising at least one active element and one or more parasitic elements coupled to controlled impedances (CI). The system further comprises a transceiver, a content-based optimization criterion computation module (CBOCCM), and a control variable optimizer (CVO). The CBOCCM receives a signal wavefonn from the active element through the transceiver, and computes an optimization criterion (OC) based on the content of the received signal. The optimization criterion is coupled to the CVO, which adaptively computes one or more control variables (CV), which are coupled to the controlled impedances CI in order to adjust the beampattern created by the adaptive parasitic array antenna. Also disclosed are two preferred adaptation implementations and algorithms, a pilot-tone based adaptation system, and a decision-directed based adaptation system.

    摘要: A method is presented for operating a phased array antenna comprising a number of sub-arrays. The method comprises the steps of introducing phase offsets into signals received from/transmitted to each element in the antenna, to provide directional transmit or receive sensitivity in a first direction; summing signals received from each element in each sub-array to provide respective sub-array signals; introducing respective phase offsets into the respective sub-array signals to adjust the direction of maximum sensitivity within a sensitivity envelope defined by the phase offsets applied to each element of the antenna as a whole. The method further comprises the step of adjusting the phase offset of each element of each respective sub-array by a respective amount, thereby to alter the directional sensitivity of each respective sub-array, respective sub-arrays having the phase offset of their elements adjusted by differing amounts thereby providing the sub-arrays with a variety of directional sensitivities diverging from the first direction.

    摘要: A system and technique for phased array antenna beam steering for transmitting and receiving without sending the waveform through an actual (physical) time delay when a time varying frequency is used as the waveform. The inventive system is adapted for use with an antenna having an array of radiating elements and includes a plurality of signal sources. Each source is adapted to provide a signal having a predetermined frequency offset signal for an associated radiating element or set of radiating elements. For transmit a plurality of first mixers is provided. Each of the first mixers is coupled to receive an excitation signal as a first input and the output from a respective one of the sources as a second input. The output of each mixer is coupled to a respective subset of the antenna radiating elements. In effect, each of the sources provides a virtual time delay. In a specific embodiment, the virtual time delay source includes a direct digital synthesizer and a digital-to-analog converter connected to receive the output thereof. A second mixer is included in each source for mixing the output of the converter with the output of a supplemental signal source. For receive the process is implemented the same way as for transmit for the range of the desired nulltargetnull return. The output of the second mixer is supplied to a respective one of the first mixers. The invention adjusts the phase and frequency of an RF waveform that is spread out in frequency and time such that each frequency arrives at the radiating elements of a phased array antenna with the phase that will steer the antenna beam in the desired direction. The relative signal phase at each radiating element is made to be independent of the signal carrier frequency and thus the antenna beam pointing is made independent of RF carrier frequency.

    摘要: An antenna beamformer is disclosed that uses controllable time delay elements distributed in a planar fractal feed network between the input port and multiple output ports. The use of time delay elements, rather than phase shifting elements, allows the beamformer to maintain a constant steering angle independent of frequencies over a broad range of frequencies. In addition, fewer control signals are used to control all of the time delay elements due to distributing the time delay elements throughout the fractal feed network, rather than grouping the delay elements near the output ports.

    摘要: A phased array type antenna apparatus compensates for phase and time differences between signals received at different elements of the antenna. Each element within the antenna apparatus has an associated phase/time adjuster circuit. The signals from each element are divided, with the first output routed to a combining circuit. The second output of one element is used as a reference signal, with the second output from the remaining elements routed to a switch. One signal is selected at the switch, and is used as a non-reference signal. Phase difference between the reference signal and the non-reference signal is determined at a comparator circuit, and the phase/time adjuster circuit associated with the non-reference signal is adjusted to bring the two signals into phase alignment. Time difference between the reference and non-reference signal is determined using dual correlators and a comparator circuit. The comparator circuit compares the magnitude of an in-phase channel and a quadrature channel from each comparator to determine time difference between the signals. The phase/time adjuster circuit is adjusted to bring the signals into time alignment. When each element is phase and time aligned, the output of the combining circuit is enhanced. Time difference can also be determined for several distinct phased array apertures within an antenna apparatus.
