Abstract:
An energy harvesting device (CTH) installed in an electrical distribution system (EDS) for powering ancillary electrical devices (AD) used in the distribution system. The device includes a first voltage regulator circuit (CC) configured to produce a voltage matched to a power curve of a current transformer (CT) to which the device is electrically coupled. The device also includes a second and separate voltage regulator circuit (SVR) which continuously operates to maximize the amount of electrical energy recovered from the current transformer.
Abstract:
An optimized, energy-sensitive system and method for fulfilling various data needs of gas utilities. In particular, the disclosure relates to optimized methods for discovering and reacting to an alarm. In one aspect, when an alarm is triggered a telemetry unit automatically alters its operating mode to begin transmitting live pressure reads every minute instead of every hour, as typically performed. This variance in operation eliminates the need for a user to monitor a pipeline system for an incoming alarm and manually request data by initiating a live communication session.
Abstract:
Systems and methods for monitoring and/or protecting state-of-charge of one or more batteries. One method comprises determining, via a controller, location information associated with the battery. The method includes determining, via the controller, one or more battery parameters. The method includes calculating, based on the one or more battery parameters and the location information, a state of charge of the battery. The method includes controlling, via the controller and based on the state of charge, a mode of the battery.
Abstract:
An energy management system (EMS) is connected to a distribution grid upstream of substation transformers and provides a demand response (DR) program signal to the distribution grid. The program signal specifies a target load adjustment. A plurality of DR RCE (Demand Response Remote Communication Equipment) are connected to phases of the distribution grid downstream of a corresponding substation transformer. Each DR RCE controls an operation of a plurality of endpoint devices. A plurality of FANG devices, each connected to phases of the distribution grid downstream of a corresponding substation transformer, receives the DR program signal via the grid. Each FANG device selectively controls power to its endpoint devices in response to a received DR program signal. As a result, the FANG device reduces the total power applied to its endpoint devices in response to the DR program signal.
Abstract:
Systems and methods for synchronized phasor measurement in a power distribution network are described. In an aspect, the systems and methods quantify the phase angle between voltages or currents at any two points in the distribution network. In another aspect, the systems and methods establish a common time reference between points on a power distribution network by transmitting a synchronization pulse throughout the distribution network. In an additional aspect, the systems and methods extract phasors from a power line waveform by utilizing a phase-locked loop (PLL) and regression of the zero-crossings of the PLL output waveform.
Abstract:
A method of two-way communications over a power distribution network in which outbound communication signals (O) and an inbound communication signals (I) modulate a time-varying waveform propagated through the network, on the low voltage side of the network. An outbound signal waveform is detected at a customer location (C) with remote communication equipment (RCE) at the customer location then producing a return or inbound communication signal. A corresponding inbound signal is produced in an associated voltage waveform and this signal is detected and processed by a distribution concentrator unit (DCU) at the sending end of the network. The transmission and detection of signals on the low voltage side of the network requires less energy than the generation, propagation, detection, and processing of signals on the high voltage side thereof.
Abstract:
A method of generating random and pseudo-random material which is incorporated in devices located at each end of a communications network for secure communications through a channel of the network. The material is used to generate time based one-time pads, one-time keys, and the keys themselves. The one-time pads, one-time keys, and the keys support a key-based or pad based cryptographic technique employed to produce secure communications of messages transmitted through the channel with a one-time pad, one-time key, or a key generated at one interval of time being different and unique from a one-time pad, one-time key, or a key generated at any other interval of time.
Abstract:

Abstract:
An electrical grid system including a phase conductor, a neutral conductor, and a neutral-to-ground conductor configured to conduct current flow between the neutral conductor and a ground. The electrical grid system further includes a fault detection sensor including a current sensor configured to sense current flowing along the neutral-to-ground conductor. The fault detection sensor further includes a controller having an electronic processor that is configured to receive signals indicative of the current flowing through the neutral-to-ground conductor from the current sensor, monitor the received signals for an occurrence of an event associated with the current flowing along the neutral-to-ground conductor; and output an occurrence of a fault in the electrical grid system based on detecting occurrence of the event.
Abstract:
A method of adaptably allowing an upgrade to firmware or a configuration of target endpoint hardware to be at least one of replaced or modified by way of instructions generated by a patch generator and executed by target endpoint hardware to generate an upgrade file, install the upgrade file, and audit the installation of the upgrade file is disclosed.
