摘要： The present invention pertains to an orthopedic support having a flexible inner member and an exo-skeleton that is molded directly onto the flexible inner member. In one particular embodiment, a versatile, multi-medium orthopedic ankle support assembly has an inner fabric support for extending at least partially around an injured part of the anatomy and for providing basic support for the injury. A plastic exo-support is injection molded into said fabric support and supplies supplemental support for resisting motion of the injured part in undesired directions. The fabric support has a main body portion for extending at least part way around the injured part of the anatomy and has edges to be secured together after the fabric support is fitted to the injured part. The invention is not limited to ankle braces, of course, as the general principle of molding an exo-skeleton onto a flexible inner member may be used in conjunction with numerous different supports. An efficient method for constructing an orthopedic support includes the steps of first placing a sheet of flexible material across a mold, cutting the sheet, injection molding the exo-structure onto the sheet material in the mold, and securing the sheet into an orthopedic support.

摘要： A helmet and method of making the same for allowing repeatably removable attachment of helmet accessories, that includes an inner liner member for substantially covering a wearer's head, and an outer shell member that includes an upper shell surface, a lower shell surface which substantially covers an upper liner surface of the inner liner member, and at least one mounting hole formed therethrough. A grommet is disposed along the upper shell surface and aligned over the mounting hole. A receptacle housing is disposed along the lower shell surface and has a receptacle aligned to and facing the mounting hole. Engagement prongs secure the grommet to the receptacle housing with the shell member therebetween. The helmet accessory has at least one mounting member, such as a protrusion or screw. The receptacle includes a device for removably engaging the mounting member when the mounting member is inserted through the mounting hole in order to removably mount the helmet accessory to the helmet. An anchor member is connected to the receptacle housing and extends into the inner liner member to engage with a significant volume of the inner liner to secure the receptacle housing in place.

An edema patch (240) may be provided for covering an open space (248) left after a user has removed a removable section from the grid. The edema patch applies pressure to the afflicted zone of the foot (250) preventing fluids from building up.

These areas have a thickness and density that is different from other areas of the support and serve to better fit the support to the body. The support may include compression molded grooves or cavities to accommodate straps, struts, gel-filled pads, inflatable bladders, pumps, and other accessories. The support may also include compression molded grooves that reduce bunching when the support is bent, and may include molded edges to minimize skin irritation during activity. The brace may also be a back brace or an ankle brace having compression molded components. A method of compression molding an orthopaedic support includes compression molding at least one sheet of resilient foam material in selected areas to reduce the thickness and increase the density of the material in those areas. Various embodiments of the present invention may include compression-molded bladders having walls which are compression-molded about the bladder perimeter.

摘要： An evertable drum centrifuge has a housing extending along an axis, a hollow filter drum rotatable in the housing about the axis and having a front end wall formed with a fill opening centered on the axis, and a nonrotatable fill tube extending along the axis and having a back end. A fill head complementarily engageable in the fill opening is fitted in a closed position in the fill opening and a suspension to be filtered is introduced through the fill tube and fill opening into the drum. A bearing rotatably supports the fill head on the fill-tube back end and a static seal is engaged between the fill head and the fill opening. A pair of dynamic seals flank the bearing, define with the head and fill tube an annular compartment surrounding the fill tube, and each have a head ring fixed rotationally on the head and having a face, a fill-tube ring fixed rotationally on the fill tube and having a face axially engaging the face of the respective head ring, and a spring urging the faces of the respective fill-tube ring and head ring axially together. The compartment is pressurized with a fluid that is forced from the compartment between the faces of the dynamic seals.

摘要： A soft-goods type, custom "in situ" formable knee brace for supporting weakened or injured knees is disclosed having formable components which conform to the unique configuration of an individual's leg surfaces. A flexible femoral component, extending circumferentially around the anterior femur, is pivotally connected with a flexible tibial component extending circumferentially around the anterior tibia. The pivoting hinge assemblies have their axes of rotation oriented along the axis of rotation of the knee joint, and may include condylar component pads. The initially flexible femoral and tibial components are secured to the leg and held in place by adjustable straps, and may be removed or adjusted by releasing or tightening the straps. The knee brace conforms to the leg surfaces through the use of a gas and liquid permeable matrix impregnated with a water-activated urethane polymer comprising, or contained within, each component. After tightening the knee brace around the upper and lower leg, and positioning the condylar component pads on opposite sides of the knee joint, the application of water to the matrix activates the urethane polymer which causes the components to harden into a substantially rigid structural member conforming to the unique shape of the individual's leg surfaces. An inlet duct may be included to introduce water into the matrix, and an outlet vent may be provided to permit the escape of air and gases. Padding is provided on each component for comfort. A calf component may be included to provide additional customized support.

摘要： A lightweight and removable leg walker is provided for stabilizing and rapidly healing lower leg injuries of a patient. The injured limb is disposed in a removable inner ankle bootie whose interior is partially covered with inflatable support bladders. While the foot is secured within the booties, it is then inserted into and additionally supported by a removable soft goods-type support. The soft goods-type support is securely attached to a walker frame by a combination of strap fasteners with VELCRO attachments. Inflatable bladders are located along the inner surfaces of two strut bases and raised heel strip. A tongue portion of the soft goods-type support also includes an inflatable bladder which provides additional support to the injured limb. These inflatable bladders encourage proper circulation from the lower leg to the heart. The walker frame includes a pair of strut bases and struts in order to prevent inversion and eversion of the ankle. The full length sole portion of the walker is constructed of two halves joined together. This construction is structurally superior to other walkers and braces insofar as it costs less and weighs less than other walkers currently manufactured. The heel portion of the sole also is constructed to form a cantilever spring, shock absorbing element.

摘要： A soft-goods type, custom "in situ" formable back brace for supporting a weakened or injured back and/or neck is disclosed having hardenable components which conform to the unique configuration of a patient's torso. An initially flexible rear torso component, generally extending circumferentially around the patient's back, is releasably coupled to the torso using a plurality of Velcro-type securing straps. Alternatively, an initially flexible front torso component in combination with a rear component may be releasably coupled to a patient's torso. Once properly secured, liquid, preferably water, may be introduced into each component to activate the activatable, hardenable material encapsulated therein. Each component may be further comprised of a plurality of panels or pads with elasticized, resilient material interposing adjacent panels. The panels or pads may be permanently or removably integrated into each torso component. Additional supporting strut members may be provided to isolate and minimize upper neck and head movement for patient's having severe neck and/or back injuries. The hardenable components may be activated by introduction of water or other suitable liquid through inlet port conduits provided on the exterior surface of each said component. Alternatively, activation of the included pre-polymer impregnated matrix may be accomplished by immersing the hardenable component in liquid. An inflatable pneumatic pad may also be included on one or more component interior surfaces to provide minor fitting adjustment. Additional padding may be included on each component for the patient's comfort.

摘要： The back support is constructed from a back brace of elastic material which carries a gel pad and an air bladder. The brace supports the pad against lower back of the user in firm engagement. The air bladder is juxtaposed and generally co-extensive with the pattern containing the gel-like material. The air bladder has three individually inflatable chambers, including left, right, and overall areas, so that the user may adjust the pressure exerted on the pad and hence the support of the lower back.
