Commutation is the process of driving current through the windings to produce a rotating magnetic field that the rotor attempts to catch. Typically, four to six commutation cycles occur for each rotation of the rotor of the motor. Unlike traditional commutation methods where only six phases are commutated during one commutation cycle, the hybrid commutation cycle includes 12 phases. The particular method for commutation switches between current driving modes where one driving mode drives current through all three windings and an other driving mode drives current through less than all three windings of the motor. More particularly, in the second driving mode current is driven through two windings of the motor. During a commutation cycle, these driving modes are alternated.

A disk drive system for use in limited power applications is disclosed. The disk drive includes a spindle motor having two or more windings, along with a spindle motor driver which can drive the spindle motor in any of a unipolar, bipolar or tripolar mode. The bipolar or tripolar mode is used to start the disk drive and then the unipolar mode is used to operate the disk drive while data is being retrieved. By combining the three drive modes a large start current reduction and higher rotation velocities are achieved. Current consumption is further minimized by adaptively transitioning from bipolar to unipolar modes of operation. The disclosure also includes a general methodology for optimal motor K.sub.E and K.sub.M parameter selection.

A disk drive is disclosed comprising a disk, and a head actuated over the disk. Control circuitry within the disk drive is operable to write a plurality of code segments to a primary area of the disk, and write the code segments to a backup area of the disk. The control circuitry reads the code segments from the primary area of the disk and executes the code segments read from the primary area of the disk. After reading the code segments from the primary area of the disk and executing the code segments, the control circuitry verifies recoverability of the code segments from the backup area of the disk, and when the verification fails, copies the code segments from the primary area of the disk to the backup area of the disk.

The disk media is divided into a first data storage zone and a second data storage zone. The data storage zones are radially disposed in discrete areas of the disk media and each zone has a plurality of tracks for storing data. The mobile device may read data from the first data storage zone when the mobile device is in a mobile environment. The mobile device may read data from the second data storage zone only when the mobile device is in a non-mobile environment and may not read data from the second data storage zone when the mobile device is in a mobile environment.

Test data is written to and read from the disk to generate quality metrics that are evaluated to generate an optimized write current setting for each ambient temperature reading. In one embodiment, the optimized write current settings are derived during manufacturing and used in-the-field during normal operation. In another embodiment, the optimized write current settings are re-optimized in-the-field to compensate for changes in the drive operating characteristics that occur over time (e.g., environmental changes and electrical and mechanical changes).
