Abstract: Polynucleotides encoding fusion proteins contain a secretable luciferase fused to a modified polypeptide of interest are disclosed. The polypeptide of interest has been modified to remove a native N-terminal secretion sequence and has been replaced by the secretable luciferase. One example of a modified polypeptide of interest is interferon. The polynucleotides and fusion proteins have biotherapeutic, diagnostic, and quality control applications in biotechnological, medical, and veterinary fields. Methods for producing the secretable fusion protein are also disclosed.

Abstract: Mobile collection and vetting of user supplied information is described. The systems, techniques, devices, methods, and approaches described herein can be used to obtain, validate, and vet information, such as customs information, in a mobile environment. In embodiments, methods comprise receiving information input via a mobile device. The information is encapsulated by an intermediate to escort the information through a firewall to the database. In response to vetting the information to determine if it meets one or more criteria, the method involves creating a record associated with a unique identifier, information that bio-identifies a user, or an indication of a determination that results from the vetting. In this embodiment, the method includes generating an electronic receipt for communication to the mobile device, the electronic receipt including the unique identifier.

Abstract: A buoy corrosion detection system includes a buoy having a double hull section in which the outer hull is designed to corrode and fail prior to the rest of the hull. The double hull section is positioned at the waterline, which is the area most prone to corrosion. As the outer hull corrodes, water passes through the hull and is detected by a moisture detector. The moisture detector then relays a signal that water has entered through the hull, and a signaling circuit then sends a communication signal to the user indicating that the buoy has corrosion. The buoy corrosion detection system leads to an “as-needed” maintenance cycle for buoys.

Abstract: A rescue basket having the capacity to safely hold two full-sized individuals increases the efficiency and effectiveness of helicopter water rescue and recovery operations. The rescue basket includes an open end, which affords an additional option for loading passengers, along with a door mechanism that can at least partially close off the open end for passenger safety. The rescue basket includes a flotation system that maintains the basket at a desired flotation level when completely immersed in water, along with sufficient reserve buoyancy to safely maintain the passengers above water when loaded. Methods of performing a water rescue utilizing the present rescue basket on board of a helicopter are also provided.

Abstract: An interface device for provisioning Internet Protocol (IP) communications to be established for base station equipment that employ proprietary device specific protocols. A fixed station interface (FSI) translates between a V.24 High-Level-Data-Link Control (HDLC) protocols used for external data connections on base station equipment to a Voice-Over-Internet-Protocol (VOIP) open-standard protocol. Upon being deployed in First Responder communications networks (that use legacy base station equipment), the FSI provisions for the retention of existing installed base station equipment while providing a low cost solution to support VOIP communications interconnectivity and reliability, thereby enhancing the effectiveness and safety of the First Responder systems.

Abstract: This application is directed generally to minicircle DNA vectors for the vaccination of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD). The transgene expression cassette in the minicircle DNA vector includes: a eukaryotic translation initiation nucleotide sequence, a mutant nucleotide sequence that encodes a foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV) capsid polyprotein precursor that contains at least one mutation to eliminate a restriction enzyme recognition site, a nucleotide sequence that encodes a protease that cleaves the FMDV capsid polyprotein precursor into a plurality of FMDV capsid proteins and a translational regulatory element to regulate the expression of the protease. The minicircle DNA vectors can be transfected directly into the cell of a mammalian host. When transfected into the mammalian host cell, virus-like particles can be produced intrinsically to stimulate the mammalian host's immune system to develop adaptive immunity toward foot-and-mouth disease.

Abstract: A security system to detect motions and/or features associated with a traveler, the security system includes a camera configured to capture an image series of the traveler in an Eulerian or Lagrangian frame of reference, wherein the captured image series contains motions and features associated with the traveler; an alarm system configured to produce an alert signal; and an electronic control unit. The electronic control unit is configured to magnify the motions and features associated with the traveler to generate frame of reference perceptible motions and features, detect characteristic kinematic behaviors of the perceptible motions and features, measure characteristic kinematic quantities of the characteristic kinematic behaviors, determine the presence of features that deviate from a threshold value for the characteristic kinematic quantities, and activate the alarm system to produce the alert signal.
