The present invention relates to fast random access methods and arrangements for the enhanced uplink dedicated channel of E-UTRAN (Evolved Universal terrestrial radio access network). A user equipment (UE) being in a low activity state sends a random access request comprising a preamble on a physical random access channel (PRACH) to a NodeB. The NodeB receives the request and sends in response to the received random access request a response comprising information associated with detection of the preamble on an acquisition indicator channel (AICH). The response comprises further in an extension of the AICH an indication of an action to be taken by the UE. In an embodiment of the present invention the action is to access the E-DCH and the response comprises configuration parameters to the E-DCH.

A UE transmits a preamble on a random access channel to a radio base station on a secondary cell and receives or detects a random access response message from the base station including timing advance information for uplink transmission by the UE. The present invention relates to methods and arrangements for interference reduction for bursty or intermitted transmissions. DPCCH gating with regular on/off-gating patterns can create waveforms that can interfere with non-UMTS audio equipments, e.g. hearing aids. The present invention relates to modifying the transmission instants of data packets in such a way such interference can be significantly reduced. This is achieved by introducing a randomization mechanism into the mapping function of data packets onto the HARQ processes, which in turn are mapped onto predefined transmission occasions (sub-frames). This results in a non-periodic transmission pattern while maintaining user data transmission requirements.

In one aspect, the present invention in one or more embodiments improves mobility management—e.g., handover processing enhancement—by providing/utilizing additional information in combination with CoMP operation, for enhancing the handover procedure. For example, the additional information is used to improve judging the most suitable target cell (14). The additional information can be, for example, angle of arrival or time advance of the UE (20) in handover, RTT, power headroom or signal strength. In at least one embodiment, the information used for handover processing at source and/or target base stations (12-1, 12-2) is enhanced or otherwise made richer by the use of “geometric information” for mobile terminals (20). In one such embodiment, the geometric information used for handover processing associated with a given terminal (20) indicates something about the mobile terminal's position (relative or absolute).
